I have a feeling that the shimmy is a consequence of general suspension wear - fitting one part at a time to cure it won't always solve it as there's still slop somewhere in the system which presents itself.

Go for the nuclear option and replace everything.

Great advert!
He'll still get texts saying "What's the lowest you'll go mate?" and "Swap it for a quad bike?"

Long time lurker here...
If I was to look at it I would like the car sorted. He has rear end sagging and did not look into it for the last 18months. Only serviced the engine...

Another M103-engined 300TE - not Barolo Red but 50k less miles and quite a clean interior. No A/C though.

Bargists, I have now got a grey 2001 Mercedes E 240 with 56,000 miles on the clock and a full Mercedes service history (I believe). It’s grey with a perfectly firm and unworn looking grey leather interior complete with a small statue of Ganesh on the dashboard. It is just about the most dull I have ever seen in a car. It makes a satisfying engine noise with not a single fault over it’s quiet 17 years. There is 0 rust (I’ve been underneath) and it has unmarked paintwork and turbine wheels.

Tell me, what does a bargist do? I own a 2008 A6 4.2 FSI allroad that gets hammered up and down the M25, and a Golf R32 used sparsely. The Mercedes is delegated to the road and I’m not sure what to do with it. Selling it is a big no no, I have inherited it. It has had a few journeys to Heathrow to ferry around my family but that’s about it.

Move the Golf to the road and SORN it?

I wouldn’t do that, I love it and I bought it last week! Now unforeseen circumstances see the Merc just there. I’m not exactly a barge man but I can’t get rid of it, looks like I’m just going to have to Waxoyl it and stick it in to storage for another 50 years.

I keep my cars at seperate locations, P38 and Lexus together, Audi and Golf, I have one space allocated at my second home, where the Merc currently is but it’s on a road. P38 gets about 500-750 miles a year at the moment (rolling restoration with Land Rover), Audi gets about 20,000, Golf about 5-10k I’d estimate, Lexus 10000 (wife) and the Merc I don’t know, maybe 250-500 miles a year. Too many cars !

You ought not be sentimental. Sell the car(s) you don't use.

Obviously I don't follow my own advice, but it still makes sense.

Planning to rent out a storage unit - It’s not my car ! It belongs to my dad but he refuses to sell it even though he can’t drive and has downsized to a bungalow. P38 is SORN and that’s out of the way, I have 4 spaces, for 4 cars so the Merc ought to go since I’m not that kind of driver, I prefer something loud and noisy rather than calm and quiet, probably explains why as father of 3 grown up kids and in a banking job I drive a R32 with a very noisy aftermarket exhaust.

Classic RR for top of thread budget. It's green and has a years MOT.

This has to be a good idea, right?

That's an LSE. Top of the range, last of the line, long wheelbase.
MOT until next year. It's had the usual faults in it's MOT history, but unless the photos are extremely flattering I would expect that to be going for £10,000.

The exterior looks very good, but what's the interior like?

As a benchmark this LSE looks decent at similar money, but needs a new headlining and a bit of fettling.

This bit... "CLASSIS [sic] STILL WORK TO DO TO" could be expensive, but it does have a long MOT.

Both are cheaper than I would expect to see.

For all the R129's out there. An interesting news letter from the r129co site. Includes some buyers guides.

No car has spent so long being a "future classic", but I have noticed dealers seem to be buying up cars which seems like a smart move.

That was one of the items on my theoretical "fettle" list!

What are RRC's like as an ownership prospect aside from catastrophic rust? I imagine they leak like the Torrey Canyon and get mpg figures in single figures, but otherwise?

Depends how well sorted it is... Once you've done everything, they're very good. I've got a late 1995 RRC LSE 4.2 (which is in the classifieds, but well out of thread budget) which we've literally done everything to, including an in and out respray. It starts every morning, and currently carries Dad across the country with his golf clubs.

MPG is comical though biggrin
