Probably a Bosch with a sticker on top. At that price I guarantee it won't be an AGM, so you can grab the lead-acid Varta for £95.

FWIW my 211 is on a lead-acid and is fine. I had alternator rectifier issues which made me think it was the service battery, so I went through the same thing you have. smile

I seem to recall that the advice with W211 batteries is that while you should probably replace the little auxiliary one with another AGM type, it's fine to switch the big feller for one of the much cheaper old-school jobs.

In fact I believe Mercedes themselves stopped shipping later W211s with main AGM batteries, to save a few quid.

Do the non-SBC cars still have the second battery? I thought it was only for braking.

I've had a Bosch AGM on my 911 for 10 years plus - they deal with being flattened (in a lockup without power) much much better than lead acid batteries.

Worth the expense IMO if like me you are unable to use a trickle charger.

Bosch don't make their own batteries anymore - i think they are re-badged Varta or Exide

No they don't, and yes it was! A 2005 car will still have SBC though. When the cars had two batteries, they were both AGMs out of the factory. I think the post-SBC single-battery cars initially came with an AGM, and later with a plain old flooded lead-acid job.

Anyone have a link to the 5-20k thread?

Looking for opinions on this, £8k 2010 E350 Estate.

Is it just me or is the walnut on the centre console missing the walnut, looks like most of the lacquer or similar has come off and 18 months of overworking the compressor. Best get the money for that knocked off the price too.

Just a little bit extra gets you an older 55k estate, so no competition there.

The filler has to be accessible from outside the car. Thems the rules. So you can’t mount it in the boot. Also has to be very solidly mounted, so that if you drive off whilst still connected, it’s the dry break joint in the hose which fails first.

So easiest is to drill a hole in the rear wing and screw it on. Ugly, but easy. Sometimes you can fit the behind the petrol filler flap, and use an adapter to get the necessary clearance to refuel. Other times, like on the XJS, there isn’t room to do that without a lot of work. Hiding it usually requires more work, is the short answer.

On something old I think slinging it under the bumper as my old CX is easy and fairly inoffensive

That's a great spot for it - a chap near here has an RRC with LPG and that's where the mount is.

You see that is great, no need to disfigure a car or are lpg users really that tight ?

That lovely CX has driven me to find others for sale, they're thin on the ground to say the least!

This project isn't that far down the road, shame I haven't got room for it... The ad reads interestingly as well.

At the risk of jinxing myself, hopefully getting the car sold.

Nice chap came to see it tonight, offering £2300 despite the lowest in my head being £2500. Just in the past day though a clicking sound has re-appeared from one of the rear wheels and on the drive with him the sunroof tilt was playing up and wouldn't close for ages, eventually got it closed thankfully.

For the sake of £200 I'm just going to accept though, it's a hard pill to swallow losing a decent chunk of money in less than a year plus all the ecxpensive and common repairs I've done but it's not going to get much better to be worth waiting.

Cue the guy changing his mind knowing my luck! Outrageous amount of car for the money though, even if the price at the bar is extortionate. biggrin
Ouch. That’s a lot of car for the money. This generation 7 is very unloved I guess - not a looker and very complicated, hence the price. It seemed like a nice car when I went in it back in the day though!

I agree - sometimes you have to just accept that people will only pay X no matter how painful that may be.

The thing is, by today's standards, they are really rather simple! But they're labour-intensive to work on, and the parts aren't always cheap, and they do seem to want to go wrong....

Having said that, whilst I suffered numerous problems with it, it never actually let me down.

I'm not sure if they really are that simple - modern cars are much more complex, but also significantly more intelligent. The latest diag software is really outstanding, and tells a much more complete story than that of 15 years ago.

You've also got the increased reliability of most items now, pioneering tech on the E65 like active suspension is now 3 generations old and has the kinks worked out.
