Brilliant work on the Jag! it looks a cracker. I only have a little experience with Jags, an XJ40, a Daimler Double Six, and a pals DB7 *cough cough*. They're not Mercs, not even close, but as good as they are they'll never have charisma quite like an overheating or malfunctioning Jaaaaaaaaggggggggg!

Re the 300E, I am delighted with it and its a lovely old bus. There are a few jobs I want to do to it before I'm fully satisfied but it will be re-offered for sale. Unless I'm in breach of any forum rules that I don't know about, I'll offer it on here before advertising on eBay or C&C. If anyone is interested, drop me an email or message and I'll brief you on the full details.....

I love that car... Just a great looking thing

Was trying to email for more detail but got an error message. Not sure if that is a problem at my end or yours.
You should now have an email!

Renault Safrane 2.0 RT auto, a grand.

The seats. Look at the seats. Has there ever been a warmer, comfier place to sit awaiting the AA?

I do love a Safrane.

Surely importing an LHD turbo would be cool? smokin

Thread budget (3000 euro) in the Netherlands. Ideal for a thread project? hehe Good engine but as a spares/repairs vehicle it’s a bit (understatement) rough around the edges but internals are good.

And if you would like one that works 100%, be prepared to stump up at least 15000 euro....25000 euro for a Baccara yikes

Best use for that might be breaking it to put the engine in a DeLorean!

In the way that we all feel and share mcrackenj's pain, I have a complaint of my own. The legendary Lexus reliability is an illusion, a sham, a disgrace.

Only today, the red triangle of doom and accompanying message of shame, warned me that a tail-light bulb was out. 16 years old and a bulb has gone already. I suspect a dealer-bashing thread in general gassing is called for, along with a twitter campaign. Those Japanese charlatans.
I feel it is only fair to comment with a contrarian experience... The Lexus I bought after seeing on this thread (for a princely £1400) had its MOT yesterday (so I must have had it about a year now) and sailed through without a single advisory. I took the opportunity to go underneath whilst it was up on the ramps and couldn't believe the condition of the heat shields, fastenings and bolt heads after 20+ years of use - almost like new and noticeably better condition than those of my always-garaged Porsche on a third of the mileage and half the age. So far I have spent on it about £20 on adding rear parking sensors (because wife uses mainly) and £50 on a service of fully synth oil, air, oil and cabin filter change.

So, fear not fellow threadists, they are not all afflicted with this dreaded 'bulb failure' flaw ;-)

More Lexus pain to report here. My LS let me down tonight. Despite repeated attempts, it took a good 8 or 9 attempts to unlock the car via the remote central locking before finally opening. The key’s red lamp was faint to the point of being non existent, and I almost had to suffer the indignity of opening the door with the key itself. Luckily I managed to nurse the car home avoiding any further locking/unlocking attempts, but am now facing the dreaded prospect of the inevitable complete strip down and rebuild of the key’s battery case.

I love buying but find selling a tedious brush with people* so try to avoid it. That's how valuable** collections are amassed. It's also why the inter-thread transaction is thoroughly approved-of here.

* This doesn't apply when buying.

** This doesn't apply to me.

I need some advice on a Volvo S60 i saw last night. It has a couple of issues that I have no idea how easy they are to fix.

Oil Leak - There is a silicone pipe just under the oil filler cap ontop of the engine which is broken? That just a replacement pipe?

Alarm - Locks on remote but then the alarm sets off. Seems to be ok locking/unlocking just on the key?

Led / Radio - The radio works ok, but the backlight doesn't work so at night you cannot see the buttons. Does this need a replacement unit?

Starter Motor - Has a replacement starter motor, but RAC said the connector on the wire is a little loose and sometimes it causes it not to start.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/volvo/volvo-s60-2.0-t/13...

The guy has the service book, but limited receipts. MOT history looks ok, and he said its been serviced regularly.

Any big pitfalls?
Regarding the alarm, that's a fault that'll need a new siren module to fix. To fix it temporarily (ish) pull out the fuse for the alarm from the fusebox that's on the end of the dashboard, driver's side (open the door and pull the plastic cover off the end of the dash, the bit with the airbag warning sticker on it). Think it's fuse 38 but don't hold me to that.
What's happened is that the siren module contains a battery backup, in case the thief removes the main vehicle battery. The backup battery leaks, corrodes all the circuits in the siren module, and the alarm goes "oh no, tampering! Must be thieves!" and does the only thing it knows how to do.
The siren module replacement requires taking out the front offside wheel lining, it's just in front of the wheel there, held in with security bolts.
... Or, just pull the fuse and deal with a 5-second message on startup which says "alarm system service required" and don't leave your laptop/phone in the car.

Radio? I think the illumination is what you lose when the radio isn't coded to the car. Sadly I'm not sure how to fix that.

Surely the starter connector is a relatively simple job to fix?

Other than that, rear legroom is a bit pants, but for wafting along the S60 is a great car. I've had mine... 5 years/80k now, and I'm very happy with it!
re the alarm siren battery. They don't always leak, so it's definitely worth taking the module out, carefully cutting it open and taking a look. We were lucky with our XC70, and it was a cheap fix to drop a new battery in and re-seal.

IIRC you will need someone with a VIDA unit to pair the radio to the car, if that's the fault. Plenty of people willing to help on volvoforums.

Agree, great wafter - still a terrible town car, though smile

I’ve been lurking on the barge thread for a while and lust after a comfy barge now the roads are so terrible that fast cars with big wheels and skinny tyres are harder to enjoy.

The recent old Mercs are the kind of thing I like but the wife is not on board. How do barge threadists get them on board? I thought a new car for her and never having to drive the barge should do the trick. But no, she still doesn’t like the idea. I suspect she would get over it if a barge found its way onto the fleet one day...

With a couple of thread meets coming up, why not bring her along? Once she's seen the kind of chap that you'll be mixing with from now on, she'll be converted.

Don't do this. A comfort or VFM argument might go a long way though.

It is always easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission in my experience.
Maybe a new handbag after the the deed is done might sweeten the deal for your good lady also.

Ha - this would inevitably lead to an arguement, and an expensive dinner as an apology for dragging her along to a beard meet!

The handbag would end up costing more than the barge and so it’s cheaper to get her onboard and then I could get 2 barges... Man maths!
