Otherwise known as, too cheap not to buy and too expensive not to fix...
... but too good to scrap.

yes the wallet may not wince at purchasing time, but the occasional * wallet-wilter will undoubtedly occur sooner or later.

* occasional is a state of barge, some months the barge gods smile, some they don’t. I honestly think regular usage is conducive to barge happiness in this respect (so of course I do sod-all miles / barge / year).

1993 Range Rover @3299, been a long time since I've seen one at that price. Assume ruinous?!

Buy a barge for under thread budget, let's say 2k, then spend 4k on it. This turns it into a 3k barge. Am I doing this right?

You missed the final step of sell it for 2k...

That's what you tell the missus.

Come to think of it, it's probably what you tell yourself too.

£2500, or lower.

Some spend imminent, but immaculate MOT history. I haven't seen anything so tempting for a long, long time.

I haven't seen anything that tempting since, well... the Gold Mercedes of last weekend.

I have a problem. You have an eye for a bargain.

Given that there’s also a classified ad for the same car at £7k, this is probably going to break top limit before hitting reserve, but much want for this (click on the full details box for lots of lovely pics) right now.

Same year as my old (blue) one. I absolutely loved that car and had one of the best drives ever in it, from Antibes to Cambridge. Being let off by the heavily armed Italian traffic Police (I took a detour....) for being English was a highlight. The 1mpg instant readout wasn't. Exciting though.

Hmmm, good MOT history too, due next month though.

Sudbury isn't far away. Anyone need a Boxster??

That XJR is absolutely tremendous.

The MOT fail sheet in 2011 is really special. Looks alright if it's not ruined though.

Is there a way of forming a collective deceptive ownership group?

A sort of merry-go-round of motorcars that to all extents and purposes appears that you're just 'looking after for a friend' for a few weeks/months/eternity but that you actually own one or two of, just in a secretive, 'passing through' kind of way...
That sounds interesting. Or a shared ownership kitty perhaps
I could be up for something like that - call it £1k each, nominated ‘owner’ responsible for organising tax/mot/insurance/servicing, but costs split across the group on a 20% each basis, where everyone in the group gets 10 weeks/year?

A sort of unoffical car-pool? If there’s a few willling participants, I’d be happy to throw the 7 & the SL into the pool for starters - my cars get so little use in general, it’d be worthwhile from my pov to keep them in use. (not sure it’d be insurance-feasible on the M6).

I know there’s more legalities to it than that, and contracts would have to be drawn up, etc - but it can’t be beyond our capabilities of thread denizens?
Another hand raised

S-Type R is considerably more st than the XJR due to the considerable extra weight. It is cheaper though, or was last time i looked.
With respect I think that's internet folklaw as the STR went head to head with the e39 M5 and emerged relatively unscathed back in the day.

I haven't driven any of them though so what do I know?
S-type R on paper is a lot slower than the XJR. That was my only point, not how well it performs against a contemporary M5.

and erm... it's folklore
Being pedantic, you didn't mention speed, you mentioned quality.

Anyway, I'd happily have either the STR or the XJR. One looks better, one drives better, or so they say.

If we are being pendantic, first establish if we are talking about the X308 XJR or X350 4.2 XJR... I would place the older X308 and 4.2 STR together in terms of speed and X350 as quickest, due to alloy bodywork and 4.2 engine. With a bit of work, the X350 is a genuine 12 second car.

That red XJR-6 is gorgeous. If I hadn't just bought an X350 I'd be going to see it, won't be long before they aren't available in budget, assuming it isn't as rotten as a pear.

Worth the X300 fancier knowing that getting replacement bumper blades is now very tricky and many are buckled like that. I nudged a wall not particularly hard parking my XJ12 once and buckled it like that, so it's easily done. At least they were available new then!

I do like the look of this LS430 with lpg

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexus-LS430-Premium-200...

It has am immaculate mot history apart ftom that terrible Lexus failing... it needed a new lightbulb in 2017.

Silver is not my favourite and if only it was 05 reg and I could put a private plate on I would snap it up
