Best smoker barges 1-5 large [Vol 13]
Discussion
Following up, and more or less closing off, my Readers Cars thread on the Daimler V8 I bought a couple of months ago, the car has been declared a total loss and I am not planning to buy it back from the insurers.
However, in case any threadists on here are interested, there may be an opportunity to get hold of a cheapish Daimler V8 which needs repairing if anyone is interested, thread here:

It's got hideous fuel economy, an ancient engine and at least 220,000 on the clock with 6 months test.

He's dropped the price from an optimistic £5000
Quite good of an MOT history, would look better with ginger indicators.
If I were going to an event with a substantial prize for "who is the biggest " that is the car I would turn up in. It's absolutely perfect. Wanting a Range Rover so badly you'll buy the nastiest model they ever sold, combined with a pitiable attempt to fool people into thinking it's not old enough to legally have sex with, with an extra sprinkling of those ridiculous window things. Love it.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-4-6-V8-VOGU...

So I'm putting down a deposit on this mini- barge 330i tomorrow. Ita got a good MOT history with 3 fails for minor reasons and the rest are passes with no significant advisories. I have a print out of service history which is all from a BMW dealer. It's for the wife who would not really feel comfortable driving anything bigger like a 5 series.
Car has no signs of rust in the usual places.
The dealer seems genuine and he video called me with a walk around the car. Only 1 owner from new who part exchanged the car at BMW who then passed it on do this dealer.
The dealer is in Bristol but he's attending a wedding 10mins away from me on Saturday and said he will drive it to me with all the paperwork so that saves me having to drive to him.
I dont need a car until October but i have neem lookimg for a nice example witj a good hiatory and none have come for a while. What do you folks think in general?

Decent history, a dealer you like and have confidence in, and he'll deliver it to you. Whilst there may be cheaper, you may not find a better car or buying experience. I think you're mind's made up, hence the deposit, and I suspect your gut instinct is spot on. Good luck.

Sounds promising doesn't it. Hope it works out as planned!I think you're mind's made up, hence the deposit, and I suspect your gut instinct is spot on. Good luck.
I have a real love for these 330i e46 cars and that engine is fantastic. Currently run a manual facelift convertible one as a daily driver which I have owned for a couple of years and previously had an auto saloon version.
Never have I seen 40mpg except when coasting down a hill! The auto was thirstier, although I drive a fair bit in stop start traffic. I would be genuinely amazed if there was no rust - even my beloved convertible one has had treatment a couple of times.
Both great cars, although oil leaks are really common and the odd warning light appearing and disappearing for no good reason. Window regulators also seem a weak spot.
For all of their faults I would still recommend one.

Is it as good as it looks? Have to agree on the E39 being so utterly right, I miss mine quite frequently.
Very much so. There are some very tiny things to fettle as ever, but I was happy to discover the two bugbears of E39 ownership (rust and shimmy) are non existent. It's clear that money has been spent.I'd forgotten just how good an E39 is to drive and how well rounded they are as a car. All of the details add up. The lovely weight and feel to the controls and steering (accentuated by the smaller M sport wheel) the excellent driving position. the huggy seats, the well laid out dash, the calming orange glow of the instruments. They are a very relaxing car on the motorway. A planted feel, tracking arrow straight with a meaty weight to the steering around the straight-ahead, with only the tiniest corrections needed to keep in the centre of the road. A quieter car than I remember too in the road and wind noise department (maybe due to smaller tyres than my B10/540i).
The 3.0 straight six is a gem. Sonorous, torquey, yet willing to rev out with ease. I think I remember Derin commenting about the shorter top gear in the manual compared to the auto, but to me the car doesn't seem too busy in top. In fact the motor seems to sit nicely on a useful part of the torque curve at 80-90. Shove is available. And 33mpg seems just fine to me. Preferable to the V8? Controversial, but I say yes.
It's first and only owner made some fine choices at the point of order. SE spec and tall tyres on 16" turbines coupled with sport suspension gives a pleasantly firm ride but with plenty of compliance. An excellent combo. The "mid facelift" and thinner rimmed M sport wheel is the nicest fitted to the E39 IMO- not as chunky and heavy handed as the later cars. And some genuinely useful options fitted, such as climate, Xenons, folding mirrors, leccy rear blind, PDC. I'm not sure about the resulted lowered ride height in SE spec, rather looks rather like an aftermarket special on a non M-sport car. I'll live with it. And whilst the clutch and stick shift offerings in BMW's of this age have never been the slickest, I still prefer to slot home my own gears. As for the yellow burr Birch wood, it's fantastic. But my other half and 6 year old don't agree.
A consummate sporting barge, the perfect foil to the squashy LS. As you can probably tell, I'm happy. May even start my first RR thread.
£4,800 S600 twin turbo, 103k, spotless (if oddly truncated) MOT history.
Not really the sort of car you want to buy from a dealer in Leicester, but has to be worth a look.

Electric rear blinds, what's the appeal? I've got one on the LS and I was initially charmed by its mere presence (never having had one before) and its clever little party trick of disappearing like magic once reverse is selected. But I've not used it since. Not once.
Am I missing something, or does it genuinely fit into the thread (that I suspect exists) about things you never knew you never needed?

They are there to shut out and infuriate those that suffer from road rage. Operate on gesticulations spotter in the rear mirror.
Very effective against tailgaters too, if they can’t see through, they drop back. Electric blind lets you subtly send the message. I use it in the 7 more often than you’d think, to the point where my default setting for it is in the up position.Electric rear door window blinds are the ultimate in one-upmanship in the ‘pointless tat’ category though.

It ends with the guy putting his electric window up to reveal a big hand giving the middle finger!
