As my S6 continues to sit waiting for more expensive parts and my cheapo celica may be scrap (how the juddering **** are brake backing plates £300+), I may be in the market for re-barging.

If one of the new contracts I going for comes in then I may be in heady upper reaches of thread budget, otherwise it's new tyres for the bicycle and growing the beard to match.

I might still find explaining a Jaaaaaag as a budget choice a challenge though

Looking forward to more pics. The best wheel for an R129.

Could be fine - K’s comments are on the ball, I’d add that I’d be looking for some reassurance on the steering rack given the MOT history.

Go for a long (30 min at least) drive to get the gearbox fully into 70’s mode (if it’s going to flare, it’ll not do it from cold unless really buggered). If it’s mild, then you might get away with a gearbox flush (check history to see if it’s been done already - it should have - sealed for life was a definite misnomer).

Find some potholes - the 45 section tyres aren’t the last word in comfort, but it shouldn’t crash. These cars eat bushes.

Try and set the alarm off - the module is usually failed by now (not as if they’re stolen anyway, but a slight bargaining chip?)

Strangely for selling an estate, no boot pics? could be trashed there - but if you’re going to big dog it, so what?! laugh

Heater should be volcanic on hot mode, and ac should go very cold too. Check headlight bulbs are working - they’re a PITA to change.

Finally - enjoy the oil-tanker turning circle! Best of luck!

Last opportunity to pick up a 4 litre decent spec X300 for pocket money?

MOT history isn't bad, and no mention of corrosion.

Shame. I love an X300 in red, especially a 4.0 Sov. Very Mike Baldwin.

Not surprised, it was up for £1495. Must have taken it down just after I posted.

Prinny, aye that was the 7 series I had. It was silver with a blue and black interior, a very dull and uninteresting place to be. Unlike my Jaaaags and Scorpio which were all light interiors smile.

Apologies for the caravan content btw wink

No need to apologise, esp with a great write up like that which I have deliberately not quoted as we’re half way through Vol 13 already! Pics of any of the older ones?

Gents, read the following T&C on a dealers website

Is this a valid get out clause for the vendor on any issue on a car found post-purchase?

“In relation to the trader descriptions act 1991 the website content of specifications, mechanical condition listed for individual vehicles cannot be held and should not be taken as read.
The content of the website should always be confirmed and it’s the buyer’s responsibility to satisfy them on completion of the transaction.
<garage name> cannot be held responsible or liable for any discrepancies, omissions, or inaccuracy before, after or at any point of sale.
<garage name> endeavours to ensure 100% accuracy of descriptions, details and specifications”

No, it’s not. A trader can’t get a ‘punter’ to sign away their rights. Not sure what the ‘Trader descriptions Act 1991’ is, but it’s not valid today, if it ever was.

It’s all a shame, because our over-protective consumer protections mean the trade runs scared from our kind of bangers.

We should be allowed to buy cars from the trade on any basis whatsoever as long as we’re ok with the idea of ‘sold as seen’.

Evening prinny,
Glad you enjoyed my, upon reflection, rather long winded post wink! Have a few pics of the X300 XJR and the X350 sov.but prior to those I didn't take many photos, of anything tbh. Will have a rummage on the old laptop.
I do miss having a Jag!
Nice SL btw, always liked those smile.
Rgds

On the subject of lovely interiors/colour combos, has anyone tried an X351 XJ? This one popped up as a "related" search item and I'm struck with what a lovely combination of hues it is. Massively out of thread for a few years yet mind.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Pretty much the connect-4 of interior colour combos for me:
  • Light seats
  • Dark(er) dash/wheel
  • Light door panels
  • Tasteful wood
Yes I have a 2012 LWB Portfolio as the family transport. I have to say I love it and think they are fantastic value for money now. The interior is beautifully appointed and it has all the toys you possibly want. It is a great motorway mile muncher with super comfortable ride, minimal wind and road noise and economical too, mine (3.0 TD) has averaged 39mpg over the last 15 months, quick enough for most conditions but as you can imagine not that easy to hustle down B-roads. Wife hates it... “old mans car”. Lol...

That is a cracking XJ, always liked them. Must feel like stepping into a time machine from an x358.

Christ, going from an x350 to an e65 7 series felt like that...

How do you chaps do your multi car insurance?

At the moment I have a multi car policy which is great as it allows me to reflect the 6 years NCB from one car, onto the other car which has zero NCB in its own right

However, this way I don't build up any NCB on the second car in its own right and I'm stuck with the relatively small number of multi car insurance policies, or worse at the mercy of my existing insurer.

So I am thinking it is better to get 2 x single polices if the price difference is small

Thoughts?

That sounds a bit st.

I have never had a multi-car policy quote be anything other than a colossal rip-off. Have always gone for 2 separate policies.

When I first got a second car, aviva mirrored the NCB I had on my first car. After the first year, rather than then building up the NCB on the second car they just continued it so when I left I had a load of years extra NCB that I didn't have to actually earn. Don't know if it was a mistake but it was most definitely a win.

The speakers I’ve got showing are the ones that will be going in. Focal 165AS3. These should drop straight in as direct replacements in the door/dash.

They’re about £160 online.

It’s difficult to recommend as I don’t know directly how old yours is. Basically, the earlier cars like mine don’t always have an amplifier (mine doesn’t), but the later ones (I think ‘96-on) have a BOSE system. That’s rated at 2ohm (IIRC) so you’d need speakers to match. The ones I’ve bought are 4ohm (much more commonplace).

The plan is to run 2x RCA leads from the head unit along one side to the boot, where the amp. will live, then heavy gauge (4mm) speaker cable back down both sides to the kickplate area, where the (included) 3-way crossovers will live. Then twin cables into the doors for the bass & the mid-range, and single cable to the dash for the tweeters. All that will run off the first amp.
I have also bought, but not yet received a powered sub enclosure which will run off the second set of RCA leads & live in the boot (or be easily removed if boot space is needed). Finally, route the DAB aerial onto the windsreen (can’t really put one anywhere else on an SL!).

I’m not expecting a true audiophile experience (the 6&7 both have the excellent logic7, & it’ll not get near to that I suspect), but it should be a good upgrade over the originals. The amp. is somewhat overkill, it’s almost double the speaker rating on RMS, but that’s for me not to be an idiot & crank it too much - reasonable, not retail park volumes! Total cost for all the bits is around £800 (the logic7 amplifier for the 6/7 is £1400 on its own, for comparison). Fitting will probably take me 8 - 10 hours, depending on how easy it is to route cabling. I’ve done many cars over the years, some were easy (Cavalier, Scirocco), some were absolute bds (BX).

I hope to get it all done before Christmas - indeed I want to get much of it done tomorrow & will be taking photos along the way - if someone organises a Southern Barge meet (anyone?) then I’ll happily bring along for review if I can make the day.
