That sounds a bit st.
I have never had a multi-car policy quote be anything other than a colossal rip-off. Have always gone for 2 separate policies.
When I first got a second car, aviva mirrored the NCB I had on my first car. After the first year, rather than then building up the NCB on the second car they just continued it so when I left I had a load of years extra NCB that I didn't have to actually earn. Don't know if it was a mistake but it was most definitely a win.

quotes coming in at £513 for the E38 and £323 for the repmobile, which beats the £950 I paid for the duo last year

I fancy a £1k random barge, having missed out on a Saab 9000. Suggestions welcome!
I don’t need one, but have not purchased anything for a while... otherwise it might be a hospital beige 205.
It's not £1k or a barge, but it'd be a lovely car to enjoy.I don’t need one, but have not purchased anything for a while... otherwise it might be a hospital beige 205.

The speakers I’ve got showing are the ones that will be going in. Focal 165AS3.
The amp. is somewhat overkill, it’s almost double the speaker rating on RMS, but that’s for me not to be an idiot & crank it too much - reasonable, not retail park volumes!
The Focals are lovely speakers. It's all about the mounting, sealing and a bit of deadening to get the best from any speakers, mind. The amp. is somewhat overkill, it’s almost double the speaker rating on RMS, but that’s for me not to be an idiot & crank it too much - reasonable, not retail park volumes!
Be far more aware of clipping, particularly from the HU pre-amp, than the RMS power of the amp as such. A clipped signal will kill the speakers far more quickly than "too much" smooth power.

Still, good for us now as there's a few good E36 left about for buttons.

I think it's representative of them sizing it up to be an S-class rival (or trying!), whereas it was significantly smaller in previous generations. Compared to a modern Range Rover etc it's not silly at all imo.
The Jaguar XJ has always been a big car - it is just that in the past it was styled in such a way as to minimise its bulk. The XJ40 is almost exactly the same size as the Mercedes W126 for example - the two cars are only a couple of milimetres apart in terms of width.
Mercedes W126 length 198" and width 79"
Jaguar XJ40 length 196" and width 79"
My brother had a Jaguar XJ Supersport of the current shape a few years back. It was a superb car and he was very pleased with it. I agree that it lacks the elegance of previous XJs, but it is selling in a market place that no longer rewards refinement in styling.

Gents, read the following T&C on a dealers website
Is this a valid get out clause for the vendor on any issue on a car found post-purchase?
“In relation to the trader descriptions act 1991 the website content of specifications, mechanical condition listed for individual vehicles cannot be held and should not be taken as read.
The content of the website should always be confirmed and it’s the buyer’s responsibility to satisfy them on completion of the transaction.
<garage name> cannot be held responsible or liable for any discrepancies, omissions, or inaccuracy before, after or at any point of sale.
<garage name> endeavours to ensure 100% accuracy of descriptions, details and specifications”
No, it’s not. A trader can’t get a ‘punter’ to sign away their rights. Not sure what the ‘Trader descriptions Act 1991’ is, but it’s not valid today, if it ever was. Is this a valid get out clause for the vendor on any issue on a car found post-purchase?

It’s all a shame, because our over-protective consumer protections mean the trade runs scared from our kind of bangers.
We should be allowed to buy cars from the trade on any basis whatsoever as long as we’re ok with the idea of ‘sold as seen’.

I also read yesterday that if you buy a £30k car and only pay a £100 deposit with a credit card, the protection offered by VIsa, Mastercard etc through Section 75 applies to the total value not just the amount paid on credit card.
I’m looking to clarify if this covers cash transfers from a credit card to the vendor, if they don’t offer card facilities.

Even with the W220 it was only a couple of inches either way to the x308.
Prinny,
Found an image of my X300 XJR. This was the car I liked best from all I've owned to date. I saw JC on TG test one when it was released and promised myself I would own one.....one day. Anyway, after some years of saving and the prices lowering as savings increased, they finally met at the sweet spot. I bought this from a garage at Silverstone race track. I had the car for several years and it was my daily. It spent a lot of time in Germany with me, as I was working over there for nigh on 9 years. My daily commute included a reasonable stretch of unlimited Autobahn. Happy days surprising a number of locals with the turn of speed she had, well, up to the 155mph limiter anyway
This beauty finally bit the dust after I had spent Christmas and New Year at home and, with a week to go before my return to DE, she refused to start. She was shipped to a specialist in Nottinghamshire (David Marks....wonderful chap, great team) who sorted a new wiring loom and sold it on to a Gent who had one and wanted another for his collection.
I, meanwhile, bought a 2.7TD X350 sovereign from Jaguar in Inverness. A 3 year old machine with 17k on the odo (images of that will follow)

I got a poster of an XJR from the Jaguar stand at the Birmingham Motorshow in (I think) 1994, in exactly that spec. I promised myself one then, and still intend to keep that promise.Found an image of my X300 XJR. This was the car I liked best from all I've owned to date. The single most beautiful three box saloon of them all. Ever. Ever.
Woefully overlooked due to ubiquity. If it was a Maserati they only made 5000 of, they'd be worth huge fortunes.

Manual, which avoids the grenade autobox (the most difficult one to check). The clutches are quite heavy (relatively speaking) even when in top fettle on manual cars, don't expect that modern feel-less clutch pedal.
Check all the toys, the dash unit can fail so make sure it works correctly. Listen for suspension faults as they're heavy cars.
Otherwise the engines etc are all very good - the 2.4 is a reliable if unspectacular unit, for some gentle barging it's fine. The D5 is better as a long-term prospect, but I wouldn't miss having a diesel.

with the auto make sure drive is taken up swiftly and smoothly when you select d. often there is a pause then drive engages quite harshly which is a sign it's on it's way out.
Don't be surprised to hear some clonks from the suspension. commonly this is drop links or top mounts or shocks themselves.
Front bushes wear quickly so check those particularly the inner front wishbone bushes.
These cars are my barge of choice as apart from general wear and tear they are pretty solid and dont seem to rust as much as other barges of the period.

That's fantastic, up there with the best wheel combo fitted to a saloon imho.
Yes, it was everything I wanted, exterior colour, Ivory leather....and those wheels (a hint of the wolfrace alloys I loved on cars as a child)....a ready-pimped supercharged Jaaag. It was, I admit, love. I still miss this car today.Rgds
Richard.
