Thanks for all the advice. Didn't buy it in the end. It had a warning message on the dash about the suspension, presumably something to do with the self levelling system? And some dodgy paint repair down the near side with lacquer pealing off. But most of all it was just a bit boring. Met silver / black interior, just all a bit meh.

Loved the engine and gearbox combination though, so I think I'm going too look at a few CLS's and take the hit on practically?
The straight 6 diesel didn’t make it into the CLS - it will be the OM642 V6 and the 7G box. I’m a fan, but some favour the earlier engine.

I much prefer the I6 to the V6.

As do I! The message was probably the airmatic, although what it could be if the car wasn't obviously sunk in some way.

Could the starter be jammed, possibly down to a defective solenoid? Rocking the car in gear (drive if automatic?) may free it up. It’s likely to reoccur and you may need to address the starter issue, but at least you’ll know.
Thanks, I'll try that. It has sat since about October, so may well be something sticking.

Does rocking in drive really exercise the starter motor?

When it's turning over, the fan is moving by about 10-15 degrees per kerchunk, so I think that means it is linking to the flywheel.
I’m not absolutely sure about the drive - perhaps try sticking it in a low gear - but my SEC is in need of a starter motor refresh, and occasionally just whirrs (meaning it hasn’t engaged) but sometimes cluncks (indicating it's jammed) and if I pop it into 2nd and rock the A pillar it’s ok. (Just typing that description has painted a mental picture of how I must appear to bystanders, so it’s coming out ASAP!).
Have you tried just turning the key on and off very rapidly without pausing a few times? My 8-Series (and an E34 540i I once had) does what you describe simply through lack of use. My BMW Indie showed me that 'trick' when I was convinced it was the batteries that were defective but weren't. Worth a go?

Battery is at 12.7 and seems strong. The difficulty with jumping it is I’d need to roll it out of the garage, and so downhill, with no practical way to get it back up the hill again if it won’t start.
Whereabouts are you, Jim?

If you're around the West Midlands, I have one of those battery boosters somewhere in the garage that could be worth a try. It probably won't help, but it can't hurt

Thank you, I've just tried that and actually got a little more action out of the actual starter motor than it did before, then it reverted to the solenoid kerchunking, but I've given it some stick and popped it back on charge, so I'll try again later.

I appreciate the offer, thanks.

I've got one of those little cigar boxes of magic, so I've been trying it with that too. I don't think it's short of electrical oomph.

But I have been wrong before...

Good to hear from Derin too.

With regard to the impending snow hazard, which barge (if any) should I be looking at...P38?

E39 with winter tyres and the ASC off does just fine.

Looked to be sitting pretty level to me? And it seemed to ride ok, although not as well as I had hoped with it being on small wheels.

Talking of Citroen’s, could we trouble you for an update on the 2CV?!

Afternoon gentlemen
After another fruitless morning of searching and looking ( a search that has been in progress since before Christmas) I’ve still been unable to find a vehicle that will allow me to join your esteemed ranks.
I’m currently restoring a property and am in need of a large estate that can carry 4 adults plus luggage tools and various sundries , large distances ( I’m in Thurrock Essex the property in County Mayo Eire) in some comfort at reasonable speed.
My current search is for E class mercs, 5 series BMW’s or (wife’s pick) an xc90, in petrol or pre-DPF diesel, although I’m open to alternatives.
Budget is £4K
Although this not an inconsequential sum (to me at least) I’m realistic enough to know that this doesn’t buy a great deal these days so have set my expectations low only to find that the offerings I’ve looked at fail to even match those meagre levels.
Thus far all I’ve found are overpriced , badly maintained, poorly presented, poorly/ misleadingly/fraudulently described.
TBH I’m finding this process very taxing but I’m sure the car I’m after is out there ......somewhere
Therefore I’m appealing to you esteemed gentlemen if you’re aware of a vehicle that fits my criteria I’d be very grateful if you could point me in its direction
My thanks in advance
Ron

As a general lurker of this very enjoyable thread, I often think of selling my current car and joining the fold....

With others having some love for Mercedes, any interest in this?

Oooo I like that, and I’m in Rochdale.

Good job I’m taking the SL to be re-seated tomorrow & all this month’s money is going on a service for the M6. I could otherwise be tempted.

I wonder if he’ll take a sans-turbo v12 7 in p/ex? (without rear A/C or fridge, since these things matter on this thread). Must resist... But I can take a gander if anyone’s interested?

Oh, and the link above has to be the longest one I’ve ever seen! Made me laugh upon quoting.

A fantastic power-barge, if I was working I'd be all over it, but apparently not having a current income means I can't spunk cash on stuff I don't need....

It's being sold by a dealer isn't it? statutory rights notwithstanding, I guess if anything went wrong with it, neither party would expect any comebacks biggrin
