You didn't sell a mint 16v to get a lower spec 190, did you? confused

Oh, and how did the G-wagon cope with towing? I'd imagine you weren't pushing the GTW but LWB's are often a bit more forgiving. I guess it's permanent 4wd like a Defender, rather than selectable like a Series Land Rover?

Evening gentlemen
Thanks Derin for the post re the Eclass - unfortunately just out of my budget I’m afraid as are all the Skoda Superb’s currently around
As for the suggestions as to buying a people carrier all I can say is that the passing of years has taken many things from me - any hint of a waist , a decent hairline , my ability to get out of a chair without making an involuntary ooofff sound, but it has not robbed me of my dignity ....
Looked at a 5 series this morning- not to buy but to make sure it was big enough for our needs and the offspring declared it more than adequate
After a few weeks of looking under every stone and only finding turds things are looking up ....
My son spotted an xc 90 on the web - fsh , 2.4 d5 ,good spec , within budget, not too far away and manual ! Avoiding any issues with the auto box but unfortunately sold when I contacted the seller , but then I found an E61 3.0 d Se - mileage getting up there but not excessive, a not quite full but near service history, good mot history. Also a manual. Unfortunately a little too far to travel to view during the week so I’ve made an appointment to view on Saturday- fingers crossed 🤞
Any pointers on what to be aware of on these would be gratefully recieved

With the sort of journeys you'll be doing, why go for manual? Auto was made for that.

Even beat the lark out of bed this morning to start tinkering with the R129. It turns out the cause of wiper failure on the way home was down to the linkage: the arm had popped off the knuckle and is worn enough not to stay there.

Had a google around, and am now thinking its both an uncommon failure, and that a replacement linkage is not commonly available without buying the whole mechanism. We’d planned a visit to the local Mercedes glass palace anyway (for herself to have a look at a new A class) but found the parts department closed. We also observed that a modern day Mercedes dealer’s customer base of a Sunday lunchtime comprises almost entirely of heavily made up, slightly chubby girls with massive eyebrows wearing some form of leopardskin, that glossy brochures are now extinct, and that seized handbrakes are not solely the preserve of knackered old cars as one customer behind the wheel of a shiny new A class exited the showroom with one rear wheel locked and one free, leaving a screech and a neat black stripe across the white ceramic tiles.

Not looking for a manual in particular I’d be just as happy with an auto -it just fits all my criteria- tbh on the journey it’s going to be cruising in 6th 95% + of the time

If you could get them in RHD, I'd consider an older Lincoln Navigator in a sensible spec as a genuine alternative to a FF Range Rover. Similar-ish build quality, larger and more practical, more reliable, cheaper to fix when required, which should be less often.

It's not as classy or nicely styled, granted.
I actually like Escalades / Navigators and would have bought one if I could have found a decent example. The main reason I bought my L320 was that it was in the best condition of anything I'd ever seen over here and it came from a seller I trusted, rather than any particular desire to own that specific model. I doubt any of the above cars would find much favour within these pages though.
I have always thought if I could get a decent Chevy Surburban over here I would love it. Yes massive but not much more so than a RR. Makes a RR look economical, mind.

Agreed - I love it!

No headlamp wipers and hubcaps, so it’s a 4 cylinder. Lack of Sacco panels means earlier. That gold/silver (can’t remember name but should as I have one just like this). So maybe an 88 F 190E 1.8 auto? Probably surprisingly low miles, just needs mild recommissioning.

Prepared to be very wrong, but you don’t learn and grow that beard without other beards telling you where you went wrong.

A fantastic power-barge, if I was working I'd be all over it, but apparently not having a current income means I can't spunk cash on stuff I don't need....

I'm afraid my inner hooligan/chav/idiot/social outcast would have to buy this car and make it sound like this.
Forgive me, thread, for I am a worm.

Or, as my Mrs says - a wurrrrum.

The exquisite noise would be a suitable distraction whilst:
a) driving about, waiting for the ABC to fail - inevitably - and throw up a massive bill on a fortnightly basis, or
b) waiting for the AA/RAC after the the ABC decided to fail and rape the savings account. Again.

Hmmm. It's almost worth it.

Pah - I've had the joy and expense of a V12 before.
It's still a hell of a lot of car for the money.

The Superb is massive, is this one no good?

Not a sexy car but for the mileage you're doing think the mpg must be OK on those?

I’m glad that photo got a positive response, it was one of those moments where I had to stand back and take it in for a minute. God I’m a saddo.

Sadly I don’t know how to quote separate posts so I’ll try and answer questions in one go.

The 190E is quite a special find, it’s a 1985 2.0 auto, Smoke Silver with Date cloth interior and only 9000 miles from new (Hence the trailer to avoid miles).

G Wagen as a towing vehicle, superb although not winning any races uphill. I was a bit worried about the SWB causing a bit of unstableness but I think the sheer weight and excellent suspension of the W463 overcame the 450mm reduction in wheelbase over a LWB. I’ll not hesitate to use it again, and 16mpg isn’t that (gulp) bad.

Great photo.
Does the G Wagen have a side exhaust? Was that standard?

Wow that 190 is quite a find! Lovely.

Aside from your local factor if you need a tiddler, do we all use the oddly named Tanya for batteries?

I've used them a few times and can't fault them. The website is useful for playing around with sizes and specs. (I wanted the biggest battery I could fit into a Range Rover Classic).

Bought twice from Tayna now, hard to know how it could be done any better.

I know it's wrong to be a concours nit, that garage queens are just big Matchbox toys for sad rich men trying to fill the void and that cars are made to be driven. But an early W201 in those colours with 9000 miles.. yes please!!

Can we have the next barge meet at JOB's house please? The Man has finally assented to take the Scatmobile in for a good going-over so late March is a good time.
