The leather interior looks a bit haggered but I know a chap in Birmingham that could totally transform that for < £500, I reckon.

Are you able to share details? (If he’s good enough for your standards, I’ll be more than happy I’m sure!).
Here's his website: https://bespokeleathering.com/

If you scroll through the pictures of two of these cars of mine you'll see a couple of examples of the work he did for me:

Near the bottom of the page in this one:

Near the middle in this one:

And then in the finished car:

Brilliant thanks - my 124’s bolsters are in a pretty similar condition to your CE’s, so I’ll give him a shout. (Hmm, soda blasting - I’ve been thinking about that!).
Yes, we’ve all been thinking about that, but we’re not teenagers any more and the thread got weird for a few hours. Let’s put it behind us.

Does Palmier have more than one alias or disguise?

I've just been looking back through the feedback as displayed with that Merc Estate. I'm sure he's had more cars than that? And, some of the cars we've previously seen and discussed here don't seem to appear in that feedback list. I distinctly remember a very nice looking E38 that he had.

As I have (obviously) met the true M. Palmier, I would say (guess) that I think there are other Fleabay sellers simply doing a similar “thing”.

The true M. P wouldn’t need multiple accounts (unless particularly dodgy) and the chap I met was a genuine sort with a credible story... and still only sells just a few cars.

That’s my tuppence anyway

Being a 3 door 1.4 I accept this is not a barge. But I thought you might like this Volvo 340 anyway.

I don't know anything about this sort of thing but surely with this sort of mileage and 4 new tyres your neighbours (if you care) wouldn't think this is a £3K car?

What are these like ? Are they from the age of ruinous rust ?

Don’t worry, I’ll let you know if he tries to WBAC it and I don’t go for it....I’m a bit put off by these tales of sudden rust and I have concern over anything with an auto box at this mileage.

Out of interest what’s wrong with the 528i, is it just that the later 530i was more powerful? I have a real soft spot for an I6 but I would guess the 540i is the favoured variant around here.
A lot of us prefer the 2.8 or 3.0 six to the V8, especially as manuals are reasonably widely available. The 2.8 is lovely and so is the 3.0. The 2.8 has better throttle response as it's a cable throttle rather than the electronic type but the 3.0 has significantly more oomph, and while the 2.8 is exceptionally tuneful, the 3.0 is a lot nicer sounding than the more modern sixes.

Yes but that one looks like it has possibly had front wings and some paintwork done. To my eye it looks like there's a slight panel misalignment between the driver's side front wing and the front door. Also, a slight colour discrepancy between that wing and the rest of the car...most noticeable in the 3rd photo down. I can't see any active rust in the photos though.

How long would you expect to be able to leave an E65 and still start it? If I leave it for a couple of weeks it needs a jump to start, that's a bit short isn't it?

A new battery will no doubt help, but I don't want to splash the cash and be in the same situation, as funds are moderately tight right now! (Don't suppose anyone wants to buy a job lot of wedding dresses do they, I have about 80 to sell biggrin)

Is it fine after a week?

I'd be inclined to just get a new battery but a good one doesn't seem cheap t a glance. Trickle charger of some description an option?

This has to be a candidate for the worst ad award. A 12 cylinder Pluto-barge that gets just 1 and a half lines and some crappy photos!

Looks a lovely car and wouldn't mind wafting around in it. Doesn't sound like HonestJohn and his team like it ! -

Sounds like it isn't just the rust on wings and sills you have to worry about, its all around the suspension mountings where it can fall away.

Seems fine after a week, it's when you get to the two week mark it's a crapshoot if it will start. Fires up no problem with a battery booster attached though (and drives like a dream, which still makes me think the rough idle is electrical in nature, especially after I found details of the recall for the valvetronic levers and the engine is outside the dates of the faulty levers)

Batteries aren't cheap, plus the added confusion of the battery type changing to to an AGM battery a couple of years after my car with different characteristics and numbers. Conflicting advice whether to try to replace with an original 2003 spec battery, or to replace with a 2005 onwards AGM one.
The ECU is expecting a 2003 battery, which has a different capacity and current to the AGM, but BMW recommend putting the AGM one in. It wouldn't surprise me if they just do that because that's all they stock these days!

Trickle charge is not an option, it's parked in a residential parking bay.

That was certainly my experience - the car rusted simply everywhere. Loved the engine and gearbox, the smoothness of the ride and the general Mercedesness, but that was the worst car I’ve ever had for rust. Somewhat ironically, my current S211 is the best car for shrugging off, well, everything. At 14 years and 200k miles it still has not a spot of corrosion on the body, and mother other than surface discolouration on the underside.

Yes, 2 weeks is a bit short. Under my ownership it went 3 weeks without starting at some point and was fine. Maybe a solar trickle charger is an option?

I’ve left mine >4 weeks in the past by switching the load cycle to ‘away’ on the lever in the boot above where the battery is, but nowadays use the obdII trickle solar thingy. You don’t need an AGM, that’s BMW telling you what stock they have, as you surmise. Tayna are the battery go-to people in my experience, decide which one you want, pay, and 2/3 days later, someone turns up with a very heavy box for you.
