No, I meant the E39 I6 530i would keep pace with an E39 V8 535i but not the larger V8's. The I6 exceptions would be be the Alpina 3.2's and 3.3's with 540i matching pace, but even those would stuggle against the Alpina V8 & V8S, M5 and Hartge offerings.
With nigh on 50bhp and 100lb/ft short on the 540i I'm far from convinced of your assertions of the performance of the 530i; you're effectively saying a 228bhp 530i would keep pace with a 265bhp Alpina B10 3.2, a 280bhp Alpina B10 3.3 and a 286bhp 540i... really?
Spot on about the age of the E39 steering and suspension components now though; and nowhere near as durable as the previous generations components.
I'm not saying anything at all about Alpinas. Why do you think I am? I never even mentioned them. If you want me to: they have proper expensive suspension and serious expensive engines and are utterly lovely. A manual B10 3.3 Touring in as-new condition would be a strong contender for all the car I would ever want, if there were any around to be bought, but there aren't. Any Alpina E39 will comprehensively out-grip and out-handle any factory E39.With nigh on 50bhp and 100lb/ft short on the 540i I'm far from convinced of your assertions of the performance of the 530i; you're effectively saying a 228bhp 530i would keep pace with a 265bhp Alpina B10 3.2, a 280bhp Alpina B10 3.3 and a 286bhp 540i... really?

I am specifically talking about the manual 528i and 530i versus the automatic 540i and the diesels. Really all I am saying that the factory 540i and diesel six E39s, excellent cruisers though they are, are nose-heavy understeering overweight lumps compared to the petrol sixes and show it badly on poor roads. And that in all engine cases I find the manuals to make substantially better use of the power than the relatively uninspiring automatics, especially in any circs where you have to go round corners.

I wouldn't use the word "cruiser"; I would use the words "brute force"!
LOL!
Irritating ad, badge and toppy at 3995, but nice spec on this E500. Did they really come with a solar roof?

If you lot keep putting up these rather fetching cars, I might eventually have to buy one and see what all the MB fuss is about...https://www.gumtree.com/p/mercedes-benz/mercedes-e...

While it’s hardly a target car, any interest in a bit of a write-up?
Yes please Prinny. Looking at the commercial version at the moment. I put a vehicle on the road for one of our guys at work- usually a small van- but an Outlander could be a cheap and tax efficient prospect at under three grand a year to lease, with his commute easily within the electric range. As you were..
If you have ever wondered if a 55" OLED TV can fit in the rear seats of an E65 while still in its box, I can tell you that it does...just...if you slam the doors and hold your breath, waiting to see if the doors pop back open again.
In other news, If you measure the width of the inside of a car, don't forget the arm rests on the doors.
It was a dainty drive home, that's for sure.

Also, the G-wagen looks great (super pic R129!) but following the usual AT search, do they really command the figures that sellers seem to be asking?
Apparently so. I've looked for a number of years now. It seems the stance is that "If even you're Range or Land Rover is stuck, who you gonna call?...G-Wagen!"

Thanks. I was thinking petrol as Mrs C does lots of short journeys so I thought it might last longer, but the D5 is very good so....
Any thoughts about the Japanese import side of it? I can understand Subaru imports but xc70 imports? Seems a bit strange.
Stay with a Euro 3 D5 to avoid swirl flaps and dpf if diesel and short journeys. Either way I'd advise you to give our Volvo man a call at Horton cars. His name is Graham and he will give you chapter and verse on the pros and cons of each. He sourced ours 3 years and 60-odd k miles ago and is a thoroughly good chap.Any thoughts about the Japanese import side of it? I can understand Subaru imports but xc70 imports? Seems a bit strange.
I have bookmarked that seller for future reference, but other than in the MX-5 world where rust free Japanese imports are highly coveted, I don't have any info to add on that aspect.

Solar panel to charge the battery and/ or keep the AC running. Had one on an A8 4.2, so they do exist, although for an E class I've not heard of it. Could be a dealer lie or a mistake, but Merc beards will know better than me!
These beards agree.https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/127189-solar-p...

A bit off topic, I know, but there seems to be a lot of G-Wagen love here, especially G-Wagen towing something. I spent a few hours on Friday afternoon splitting wood. a 300 GEL then hauled it home. I reckon the trailer is a tonne and its contents another two tonnes. Add the petrol splitter in the boot and you have quite an outfit. The G is ultra-competent in this mode, though. I must, must buy one. Not sure who the handsome lumberjack is.
Sensational use of the old Gelandewagen r129, we would expect nothing less! They’re amazing bits of kit aren’t they, although I can’t think of many ways to vapourise 100 litres much faster! Re 2.0 190Es and performance, I don’t find them “slow”, they’ll accelerate to 60 in 10 seconds and cruise happily at 100mph all day long. In the 12,000 miles I did in the now “thread” Bornite Sportline it probably averaged 32mpg and never failed to make me smile. There aren’t many cars that can hold a candle to the W201 in terms of drivability, practicality, longevity and overall running costs.
Harking back a couple of pages to the E39 performance re 530i vs 540i - I think this is the reason the diesel barges of this era also make entertaining companions. Big lumps of torque always available, they shrug off their weight fairly easily and wind up to legal speeds nicely. Once really stretching them, of course, their diesel lumps do them no favours as they're slower than the petrol counterparts of course.
https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/127189-solar-p...A rather expensive option as I remember!
Does anyone recall the woodlouse 211 500 we had a couple of months ago? Pretty sure that had a solar roof.

Looks good, 4.2 too isn't it? Third thread X350 in a short space of time now. With the gearbox in S mode I've found mine becomes a far more engaging drive, and remarkably quick by all but powerfully built PH company director standards. As standard it doesn't really have the low down torque to dominate the road from 1400RPM, which is all the gearbox seems to want to do.
