Why would anyone buy this over a Ferrari / Porsche / McLaren / Audi GT3 car that is about a third of the price and can be run by your local GT racing team?
Because it's also a road car and because they have the money and the brand-passion.

A Radical is a road car too but that doesn't mean you would want to drive it much.

Other than a quick drive very early on a Sunday morning I cant see them being used other than around Harrods by a few Arab playboys or to a Goodwood Sunday Service once a year.

Front overhang looks like it will be a nightmare on the road, front lift or not.

For the money you could buy a far better road car and a proper race car with full support.

If McLaren sell them all, who really cares who buys them? It's good for McLaren, good for their employees, good for British Manufacturing, good for HMRC...

Lots of sour grapes on Pistonheads.

Looks a little better there. Private track day toy, if you can afford one then get one.

As for the article critics, you didn't pay to read it, if you don't like it......

I never said it wasn't. McLaren is a great success story and long may it continue.

I just find these 'road legal' racers a strange concept. You end up with a pretty poor road car and a track car that isn't quite as good as it could be.

Obviously that doesn't matter to the buyers as they're just another toy.

You make a valid point which is inescapable. Sometimes though it just seems that an extra proof-read wouldn’t go amiss smile

Don't be silly. It's a no compromise track car for the road that's 2s slower than a no compromise track car (GT3 car) despite having an extra 300bhp and allegedly 200kg more downforce rolleyes Better hope no-one takes the restrictors off their 650S GT3....

Being realistic, I'm sure it's a great car. I've done the 'it's a marketing ploy' to death, so will leave it be now. Nice write up from Dan, and must have been a lot of fun driving the thing around Estoril. It's a fantastic circuit (turn 6 being my favourite).

Still not sold on the looks at all having seen it a few times in the flesh, and really can't help but feel it could have been a really beautiful thing if they'd not pursued the whole 'form over function' rubbish, but it clearly appeals to those who bought it, so well done!

True, I guess those doing the writing are professionals all the same.

Any given the sheer number of adverts everywhere now, I do pay to read it - in fact, my reading it is what get the writers paid.

So making sure I come back for more reading and eyeball time on the site should be paramount, and good copy would surely be a factor in there wink

Saw one of these testing a Millbank the other day ( I was there at a totally separate Company Car do ) .

Got to admit that while these things are not really my "cup of tea", it did look pretty impressive in the flesh. If you had the money, why not ?

Better hope nobody puts slicks on their Senna...

Read the article again, that '2 seconds slower' time is while still wearing road tyres! Which is seriously impressive.

whilst I love the senna it does make me wonder what the results of making a 650s gt3 road legal would be, presumably not far off the senna if it had the same tyres?

Man, maybe I'm just getting too old or something, but I'm finding it really hard to care about such 'cars'. It's all a bit like porn; ridiculous proportions, silly performance, and zero relevance to the real world. They're basically for people with too much money to w*nk over and spunk their money up the wall. In 6 months time there will be another porn-mobile with a larger wing, more power, a bigger price tag, and just as little connection to the world of actual cars. Make a race car (and keep it forever on a track) or make a road car - a race car for the road just seems absurd.

In between cars at the moment so I'm tooling around in a rented Mini Cooper D and frankly 114hp from a 1.5litre 3-cylinder diesel still leaves too many times of frustration with slower traffic. I can't imagine driving this Senna abomination anywhere without feeling a)massively annoyed and b)like a bit of a bell end. One last thing - it can't possibly be worth making it so fugly for .02 seconds around a racetrack. Or 20 seconds for that matter.

Opinions and all.... but if you buy one, good luck to you. And your guide dog.... wink
