Genuine question; how do you get an additional 30bhp from the cooling system? I can only think they've fitted a better, more efficient water pump. But 30bhp?!

I think that might be bad grammar - think it was supposed to say that Mclaren have extracted 30bhp from the same engine as before - unless someone can shine a light on it?

Will it still sound terrible? That motor in all McLarens is their biggest let down.

Top bombing Mclaren - that is very nice!!

Serious question, if left out in the rain, is the exhaust not at risk of filling with water, and ultimately into the engine, or do they rely on a U bend trap?

Which would still fill with water but should never reach the engine.

It's just extra boost pressure and a revised map. Simple to get that bit extra on a turbocharged car.

Awesome! Really love the cars that McLaren are putting out.

The extra 30hp extracted from the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 cooling system

Come again?

Does this mean they improved the cooling system of said engine, and ended up with an extra 30bhp?

Or that the engine was tweaked but with the same cooling system?

Or just a typo?

Presumably it'll still sound ste though whatever they've done...

Probably the only supercar-type thing I'd actually buy. Not that I can afford one, of course. hehe

at risk of being eaten alive on here by a mechanic, the engine ECU has probably been loosened by 30hp by an increase of intercooler surface area, quality and or air flow into the intercoolers. one of the main issues with turbo engines is heat soak and thus an increase in power output must be matched by intercooler and or airflow increases.

this way of increasing power does
not necessarily need upgraded internals, as seen with the 997 turbo engines.

Where's rent-a-quote Rambo today ?

Sorry - I forgot - he doesn't get out of school until 3.45 ..... wink
I can only imagine that Rambo will be full of disdain for this car as is doesn't have a naturally aspirated engine and, as we all know, Rambo is all about the N/A at the moment and wouldn't for a minute entertain something like say a Ferrari, or indeed this, that have resorted to turbo charging hence taking away all of the emotion that would be required from him.
Has he gone off carbon tubs then ?
Must be a proper quandary for him. On the one hand he wouldn't buy anything that has a "wibbly wobbly" non carbon tub (or would he?) and on the other he wouldn't buy anything without a screaming N/A engine (or would he?).

I expect the answer, as always, will tie in with whatever he is about to purchase next. Which he will only be too glad to inform us of. Repeatedly.

I take it the seats pictured are the optional items from the Senna?

The engine is epic, may not sound like a rumbly old V8 (or a Mazda rotary laugh) but the McLaren V8 twin turbo engine really isn't a let-down, not by any measure.

This over a 488 Pista with change any day of the week.
I don't think this is supposed to compete with the Pista is it? I thought that would be the LT variation of the 720s.
I think that McLaren have shifted their strategy to position their cars slightly out of sync with Ferrari to avoid head to head comparisons.

The 540C/570S/GT are priced below the 488 and the 720S above it.

You need to listen to one from within and hear one drive by ... they sound like a chavved 4 pot hatchback at best.

When I had a test drive in the 720 all I could hear was tyre roar, amplified by the open rear deck behind your head.

I dont meant to hate on Pistonheads, but I gave up reading the article and just looked at the pictures as the proof-reading is non-existent...

Better looking car than the Senna to be sure.

They can clearly build cars but I just wish the F1 team could get its act together in the same way!

I'm interested to see how this stacks up compared to the 12C from days of yore. Similar power outputs, I wonder how much has carried through...

You could tell what it looks like from the pictures?

I think McLaren have learned from the Senna and decided to launch the car at night so nobody can see what it looks like. Even the video is shot in low light with a tarmac coloured car.

I think it looks nice, but I'll reserve judgment until I can actually see it...

That video though laugh

I do listen to one when I drive mine, as I said they don't sound like a traditional V8 and some like the sound, other don't.

The point I was making is that McLarens have never been slated for their performance, so I can't agree that "That motor in all McLarens is their biggest let down" when it offers massive power when called.

Did you find the engine in the 720s lacking?
