Giant Georg Karcher in the VW, Gavin Green in the 944 and Simister in the Audi?

It's a 3 way VW Group Giant Test.

I absolutely loved the shape of these when they were new, they still look great now to my eyes.

Had a 2.3 5 cylinder one of these whilst at uni, loved the shape. Still looks cool even now. I wouldn’t exactly call it sporting though. Great to waft around in mind.

this one was mine a 2.0ltr.
It was roomy and comfortable but wasn't quick by any stretch of the imagination.

I considered one of these as a first car a few years ago. There were a few about but most were a bit doggy and tired. Can't see there being many about in good shape now which is a bit sad

Yep !
Most Audis did back then if not all.

I love Audis from this era. it was back when they were a German equivalent of Saab. Left-field cars for the thinking man who found BMWS and Mercs to be too brash. Lovely understated styling and just oozes quality. How things change!

To all those saying its too expensive, I disagree. There are very few Coupes left and they aren't making any more so in the current market this is what people are asking for when selling a 25 year old rare modern classics. One with 60,000 miles, if used sparingly isn't going to go down in value. If anything the value will rise.

I had a 20v Hreg version and all I can remember is that the doors were about 6 inches thick, incredibly solid old tank. Unfortunately it was also gold. Which is a very dodgy car colour imho, very uncool and a mistake I couldn't live with for long and will hopefully never repeat. Went pretty well tho.

We bought a 2.3E a few years back for £425. It was a hoot and sounded amazing. Sadly the 4-pot motors that followed never did it for me - and the 2.8 was barely any faster!

Always liked the looks of the S2 Coupe, and wondered if it could have been a Quattro beater with the RS2 parts. Though wasn't there some arrangement with Porsche that Audi would only make the RS2 in estate form?

i had a 2.2L 5cyl one of these in the 90s in Burgundy. It was a lovely thing except (draws breath)
- Under braked
- Under powered.
- Thirsty (see under powered)
- Noisy.

One with 200bhp+ would be nice, 112 or so isn't enough

An R/S2 Saloon does exist. I'm not sure whether it was a one off or a very, very limited model. Not sold in the UK but Google will have the answers.

I love how these look but after owning a 2.8 cabrio of the same vintage, I can vouch that the thirst doesn't justify the lack of performance. Great for cruising but sporty it is not. I'd go for the 5 cylinder or not at all.

Always really liked the Audi's of this era, when they were understated, solid and classy, and the occupants didn't leave the stench of ganja behind as they drove past.

Link to Audi produced road car, or it didn't happen.

It’s the larger 5 cylinder engines where the boat anchor is very literally pushed all the way out front...he are some photos I took of an S2 the other day:

- The engine’s so far forwards, the radiator is fitted alongside it! silly

Although never a drivers car, these are from the era where Audi gained the reputation for quality. Its been downhill from there as far as I can see, though the same can be said for BMW, Mercedes, Volvo and the like all of which once had a reputation for above average build.

I deliberately left out Jaguar from the above.

That said only Jag and BMW ever matched the quality with a good drive.

They’re all just brands now.

Some of the RS2 prototypes were saloons; 4 or 5 perhaps. I believe they were driven by Audi high-ups during the car's development. As stated, Porsche dissauded Audi from producing an RS2 Coupe as it would have been a competitor for their own cars.

My Coupe Quattro (normally aspirated) was a lovely car. It wasn't a rocket but it felt dependable. Had it for years. It was a car you could use to maintain high average speeds. The lad who bought it wrote us a thank you letter saying how pleased he was with it. Later I had an RS2 for two years which was a fantastic experience but... I dont know if it was the car's extra length but I could never commit to a corner as fast in the RS2 as I could in the Coupe Quattro. The Coupe handled very well. Y'know, for a chunky car.

Link? And I'm guessing they ended up being crushed?

My file of articles (and an original sales brochure) went with the car and I can't remember where I read it.

Opinion varies between two and four original RS2 Saloons being built. In the article I read they were built during development. There are stories of two being in the middle east. Of the other two, one is in the museum in Ingolstadt.

And then there are the recreations.

The thing I fairly certain would distinguish a real RS2 saloon from a fake is the rear light and reflector arrangement.

It would take a remarkable bodyshop to rustle up one of those.
