I know... here we have one heck of a petrolhead's car... basically an engine and a seat, and the required bits to hold it together. With pretty much no other purpose or use other than to drive, and drive fast. And while other cars may not have that purpose, this doesn't even carry the baggage, "just in case".

And so we have to a large degree a pretty pure example of a drivers car, a petrol heads dream... and we're complaining because it's less safe in a crash than an other random car we chose, and someone died in a crash in one once.

No one is asking you to buy it, it sure doesn't fit your criteria, but really... we would think we were at mumsnet smile
The reaction to it on here is way more scary than the car. Pathetic.

biggrin

It’s like nobody has ever driven anything other than a modern car. My 1970’s Mini was probably less safe. As I fly into England I expect upside down cars to be littering the countryside.

Good luck surviving that.
That's some highly scientific analysis you're carrying out.

It does now have optional Traction Control and bigger mirrors. It even has wider rear tyres so I think we're all good on safety now.biggrin

I'm more worried that they've moved the petrol filler to the other side of the car, that's going to catch out upgrading owners for sure.

Oh, and the exhaust looks like a Minion laying down.

Performance is pretty similar to a Caterham 7 620R but one of those costs around £55k OTR. Which one would you choose?

If I had £40k to spend on a toy this is where my money would be going

It still has some roll protection, it's just hidden now (a big improvement aesthetically imo). You can also see from the overhead view the side impact protection looks relatively substantial.

but the thing that stops me buying one is : how do you clean it?

I don't think my local Afghan car wash would do a good enough job for fiver...
How can you be in a position to buy a 40k toy yet have so little gumption?

Different ways to do the same thing. Drive both then decide. I found the character of the Atom more fun.

I think it was joke, which I have to admit I did find quite funny

Anyone know the 0-60 times for the ATOM 2 non-SCs?

Think it was around 3.5 for the 245bhp version

But do people still see the 0-60 times as anything of importance..

Generally these 0-60 times can’t be replicated anyway without needing the perfect surface, temps tyre pressures etc ...

60-100 is a more interesting stat to me
Oh but I guess no one on here would ever buy an atom and break speed limits in fear of your own safety??

I am very very tempted by this having an atom 2 in the past and a current Zenos E10r owner.

Love the idea of being able to tune it safely too
400bhp would be quite nice

I miss my Atom3 a lot... although I did buy it because I thought I should own one just to feel like I'd ticked a box as I'd always regret it if I didn't. Apparently from talking to other owners this is quite common!

All this talk of accidents though reminds me of this fire video. I'd have been trying to tear the harness apart with my teeth in terror...

Anyway, I'm familiar with the old engine, but know nothing about this one. I suppose the turbo is inevitable, and the torque figure is huge, but is it any good? And what can you aftermarket tune it up to, and would you even want to?
As far as modern 4 pots go....

It's quite laggy (I don't mind this)
Makes a half decent noise
Pulls very hard to the 7000 limiter

It certainly doesn't need any more power in the Civic (I'm sure I read somewhere it was putting out a tad more than 320bhp)

195 front and 255 back?

Gulp 2, the torque must be good.
yes

229 vs 310

35% increase with the potential to go way more without the heat issues of the supercharger. Betting the R version will comfortably put out 370HP with enormous torque. The main question for me will be how it drives and if they’ve retained the charm of the car. Can’t wait to try one though.
There are rumours of heat issues in the FK8

Interesting to see what happens. It’ll not sound as nice as the blower, that’s a given wink

I did an experience day at a small circuit on the back of Bovingdon airfield near Hemel Hempstead last year.

It was a SC Atom 3 with slicks, pulled off in second and then put in 3rd and left it there. Pretty much foot to the floor all the way round...amazing sound when the SC kicks in.

Had an intercom with the instructor but couldn't really hear him. Only had one very tight corner where the instructor forced be to cut through it due to risk of spinning the car. The amount of grip on the tyres was absolutely amazing. I was the only one in the briefing booked on the car but after I got out there was a queue at reception with people wanting to swap out the Lambos, Astons, Ferraris etc.
Drift Limits? Did that experience a while ago, the Atom was a great laugh to drive. Instructor was good too, encouraging and actually let me drive the car and feel what it was doing.

By contrast I did a 6th gear experience with multiple cars later on at Castle Combe, one of which was the Atom. Instructor was a rude and whiney bellend and kept grabbing the wheel on just about every turn, so I couldn't feel what the car was doing, then had the cheek to tell me I was steering incorrectly all the time. Was a real shame as all of the other instructors there in the others cars were really good.

RE: the Atom 4, I do wonder how tail happy it will be with the considerable increase in torque!

I don’t think there should be too much concern around the issue of torque vs traction.

I currently have a Zenos E10R with oodles of it 350lbs/ft tho is prob 150-200kg heavier than the atom but doesn’t have any problems getting power down ...

And for all those who are concerned doesn’t the new one have TC?

stop getting offended my dude, may I offer you a safespace where you can be safely separated from discussion you dont approve of? wink

and no, ``petrolheads'' arent a hivemind, which is why we have many enthusiasts for many different cars

have a nice day, friend smile
