I had a 2001 facelift VTS in topaz metallic (gold) from brand new as a 17 year old, insured under the old man's name, with a kevlar ram Air induction kit, a manifold back exhaust, some cams and some head work, had it rolling Roade during a "saxo sport club" meeting at 172bhp which in this day is nothing but that thing was unreal quick around tracks and b roads. I absolutely loved it and like a poster above mentioned, it was the go nation of me learning to properly drive and handle a car. So much fun!!
It didn't really have that much.

Someone ran into the back of my Polo ten or so years ago. My car had a slightly dented bumper. His car was written off completely. The Front end effectively disappeared and the car had to be towed away. I wouldn't let anyone of whom I was even slightly fond drive one of these.

106Gti also worth a look (pretty much identical cars).
Yes, originally I went looking at these but would've cost me an extra £1500 for a new Lion badge
Not worth it to me but prices much closer now

Friend has a slightly leggy one (130k) that was level with my old Clio 172 up to 100mph..

Pretty sure you could make that from lumpy cams and a map, I broke 150bhp with just headwork and breathing mods, standard cams and mapping.

Yes, the cams were lumpy as fk and it was a btb exhaust system, all done by GMC Motorsport up in Scotland, very well known on the scene at the time as they used to race. Also used to do the throttle body and supercharger conversions.

Seems perfectly possible to me - 107bhp per litre for a fairly tuned 1.6 litre

Standard engines can make that 30 years ago

They weren't far behind on a track either

Not when it only started with 75bhp/litre. It would need forced induction or ITBs to get anywhere near that figure

A great car but as alluded to in the article a Clio Sport is a better car in every way.
That's where my 3k would go, for no other reason than you need tiny feet to operate a VTS with any sort of fineness.

A guy had one of these at a place we're I worked in stockport in 2001 . It was a white one he had it lowered kept the looks standard it looked mint . All I remember he took me for a spin a few times . It just felt slow I was driving a vw polo at the time lol . Obviously the saxo vts was quicker but just didn't feel fast . Think he'd only done basic mods air induction etc . I wouldn't mind having one myself nice looking cars and I bet with a few mods power turned up a bit they would be more fun .

The people who did his engine used to do one retaining the standard throttle body that put out very close to that figure - 150ish atw ( probably close to his claim plus vagaries of rolling roads ). Expensive but possible. You'd need more details to really know

A lot easier with ITBs though agreed

If it was GMC then I fully believe the figures, John was no bullstter and made a thing about taking the piss out of tuners making up inflated power figures *cough....LAD Motorsport*

They responded better than the 8v 205 GTi engines to equivalent tuning, +30bhp easy/common with head, cam , decat and exhaust, 205 GTi I needed a blue printed engine + head and cams to get a real 25bhp gain (though better power band).

I test drove one once, with a very serious intention of buying one but I hated how close together the pedals were and the weird ofset position of them. Shame really, as it's a car I've always admired and one I've always wanted to take for a spirited drive down a B road.

I had a (slightly knackered) Peugeot 106 for a month last year and rather liked its light-hearted handling and enthusiastic engine. I did not like how much of a squeeze it was to sit in - but that's probably my own fault for being mildly tall with somewhat short legs - and I'm pretty sure I've now got stress fractures in my pelvis and both femurs just from thinking about what it would be like in a crash.

Still the fastest thing I've ever seen heading onto a slip-road. I think the small size, but tiny weight and modern grip made it look like a barrel of laughs.

The last car I remember that actually had a proper community behind it. They were everywhere, and being cheap, cheerful, quick and modifiable, they were without the smug wker attitude that surrounds modern hot hatches (most of which have more in common with a late 90s M5 estate than they do a saxo, which is tragic).

Really? Every hot hatch since the saxo have a smug wker attitude?

Looking at the current prices of 106 Rallyes, I'd get in quick if you want one!

I always remember the 5th gear episode when Tiff was chasing VBH around the track, in one, she driving the then new phase 1 Clio 172. He was all over the back of her car in the corners and just losing a car length or two on the straights. It really was a close run thing, as those lap times quoted by S M above demonstrate. Quite a tool then for just 120 BHP!

And yeah, I preferred hot hatches when they were small and light like these, the new Civic Type R is like an S Class Merc in comparison to one of these Saxos.
