I can't understand how it is that VW are even selling any vanilla Golf GTis anymore. At almost £30k before options most buyers surely just find a few extra quid to buy a Golf-R instead.
I think that raises two interesting points :-

(a) some people prefer the GTI
(b) the Golf R is too closely priced to the GTI. Borne out by VW recently saying that the new R will be pushed in power (and thus price) more closely to an RS3 and A45.

Can't VW just lie/cheat like they have done on emissions before?
They're far from alone, just caught first. Others are far from saintly white on other matters as well. For example, most manufacturers are a bit conservative about power as well, but as that's favourable, nobody really cares.

Maybe company allowance drivers care, but as a private owner, tax is amenable, mpg now that the company car drivers are in the Med is pretty good and it generally does the job.

Having said that, embarrassing for a huge corporate to be so wrong-footed by some not shocking legislation.

Anyone looking for a standard GTi should have a trawl of the net as there are some good lease deals around on these.
