What does this offer over an E36 328 or E46 330? Very little except a hatch and a nice blue colour.

If the public bought cars on ability rather than badge, these would be a lot more common. Cracking cars to drive.

More interior space in the back and a bigger boot I would say

The ST220 is nicer to drive than the E46 330i. That's probably an important point, too.

A handsome beast set off by lovely alloys.
Sneered at by badge snobs but I'd rather been seen in this than a council chavved up BMW.

I had one of these and loved it. Longest time I've ever owned a car, and in the end, I only changed because I crashed it! Given the choice, I'd have a blue estate with white seats, but the red seats were lovely too.

The rear bank of plugs is a pig to access on one these IIRC.

Crankshaft issues and ruinous VED on the Ford probably.

Funny how Sierra Cosworths are feted and worth a fortune, yet these are worth not very much, its a better car in most ways, just not valued.

Strange thing the car market.
LOL.

The ability to use it when there has been a dusting of snow wink

The appeal of not looking like a 316i? The ability to find a good one with under 150k on the clock at a sensible price? From experience, a Mondeo is a finer car to drive than an E46 3 Series. If you want the badge then I see the appeal of the BMW, although even then, is a 15-20 year old BMW going to give you many bragging rights? I'd say the Mondeo has pretty much everything over a 3 Series.

My Brother in law had an E46 320d. I drove it, expecting it to be a good drive, but I was very much underwhelmed by it.

Mk3 Mondeo was better to drive and Mk4 Mondeo more pleasant to ride in too.

Many years ago Top Gear compared a bunch of 2l saloons, round a track amongst them an E46 318i and 2.0i Mk3 Mondeo (as well as a Mercedes-Benz C200 W203, Honda Accord, Renault Laguna II, Jaguar X-Type and Toyota Avensis) . The Mondeo trounced the E46 (which made more power than the Mondeo) by 2s round the top gear test track.

That was the boggo Mondeo as well, the ST220 was *much* better.

While it would never be top of my list for "cars I'd want to take on a fun drive", equally the Mk4 2.5T is still fun *to* drive and I never hit a twisty road thinking "I wish I wasn't in this thing". I sometimes wish the original owner had fitted the sports suspension and/or the electronically controlled variable dampers...but then I'd never get it up the school drive to pick the kids up as it already touches unless I'm careful (sports suspension is 30mm lower).

On a related note it seems someones filmed (a Mk4 2.5T) round the Nurburgring as well as some track days....it's not slow (although from the sound of the later ones it's also very much not stock either).

Given long enough and kept in good condition it will definitely appreciate. Even st old Fords (which this isn't) seem to reach high values about 30 years from release.
The test is who has the patience and the space to hang on to a leggy Mondeo for 15 more years, and hardly use it!

Definitely better cars to go for in the long run.

Let's leave out which is best to drive as we all like different things. But you do have the age okd RWD vs FWD argument. And i presume these are not as balanced as a 1.8 Zetec? And £4k would get a very good E46 or E36 with budget for some modifications. Is there much in tuning options available for these?

Bragging rights and badge may impact your choice of car but they don't mine.

I do think the boot space may come in handy though, particularly when going to the garden centre and picking up those tall plants.

I had an ST TDCi for 5 years which was a decent car. Great for doing the 20,000 miles I was doing a year and it had I think 190bhp with Focus ST calipers.

I could have one of these, 58,000 miles for £2000 but decided against us due to petrol costs and the extra £1000 insurance it would have been at the time ( 21 year old living in Liverpool )
The fella ended up selling it for £1500 as he just wanted it sold with minimal hassle. I would have took it off him for that much.

Recaro heated leather seats. Cruise control. Xenons. I'd have another tomorrow if It was brand new from Ford. Once they get to 100,000 miles things start needed replacing from there onwards.

When I decided I wanted to change my ST220 I went and took out an E46 330i expecting to buy it. The 220 was so much nicer to drive I went and tested another 330 thinking there must have been something wrong with the first. To the person who mentioned understeer, all cars will understeer at a point and the point the nose would run wide in the 220 was pretty amazing for a FWD car of it's weight. I always prefer RWD but a very good FWD car can be better than a mediocre RWD one. That's why I never bought the 330, I know Clarksons reviews are to be taken with a pinch of salt but the phrase "every time I drive one of these I wonder why we buy anything else" speaks volumes. I only sold mine as it was getting long in the tooth and I wanted something faster. I've a Mk4 Mondeo now as a daily and would love my ST back. Even the basic Mk3 was a more fun chassis than the Mk4 which, as a drivers car, was a disappointing replacement.
