So what is the "ultimate colour combination?"

For me, it would be a BMW in "Superman" spec, so Estoril Blue exterior, red leather on the inside.
I realise this isn't for everyone, but after browsing second hand BMW's and getting bored of variations of silver and black, I'm looking for something a bit....brighter.
My old E82 135i was 'faded' Superman........ .......... being Bluewater (pale silvery blue) with Coral Red interior, and was the only 135i in that scheme in the UK.I realise this isn't for everyone, but after browsing second hand BMW's and getting bored of variations of silver and black, I'm looking for something a bit....brighter.
It was seeing John Surtees BMW 507 at Goodwood in an almost identical shade and interior colour that gave me the inspiration to choose the combo for my 135i order (salesman thought I was barking for choosing it, until it arrived at the dealer and he admitted that everyone in the dealership were going into to look at it during PDI and making favourable comments)
I love a light interior too. I would have probably kept my second Morgan had it had cream leather instead of black.
I've just bought a Merc estate for impending family duties, and it has that lovely pale grey leather inside. Everyone has warned me that kids will wreck said interior with drool/blood/poo/vomit.
I don't care. Up front, where I will be, will be airy Nappa goodness. I will cover the rear seats if I have to and put plastic mats on the floor. Rather than than go back to boring black.
On the exteriors. I like a dark metallic to go with a light interior. One exception - that pale sky blue. My first Morgan Aero 8 was Bentley Silverlake Blue, with Vanilla leather piped in dark blue. That was my favourite colour combination ever.

I've always been happiest with bright darkish metallic blues like my old Z06 electron blue or Fiesta ST (although metallic purple is cool too)
As for the interior, I favour dark grey but a contrasting insert or piping to match the body never went amiss.
Here is a perfect car for the colour
I dislike ads which go on about "very sought after rare colour". If it was sought after, people would have bought it in the first place.

obviously it depends on the car, different combinations work on different cars. However IMO i find that the racing colour of where the brand originates from is usually the best colour for the job.
Japanese? white.
mercedes? silver
jag? british racing green and cream leather
italy? rosso/red
france- dark blue with cream leather

Was recently looking for an up market car, and as everyone has mentioned, was fed up with dreary colours. Always wanted an Almandine and magnolia W124 years ago, but could never afford them.
Now I can, just about to give up looking when I found a Lexus ISF in glorious deep Ultrasonic blue with white leather. That combined with a 5L V8 is just heavenly....

Not true. The sought after colours later on when used are often that, because they ended up being rare, because it wasn't a prospective long term the 'enthusiast' owner buying it new, they ordered re-sale grey not hi-viz whatever, because they were going to be chopping it in 2 years time.
Hence the few cars in decent colours, whatever they maybe, end up being the rare and sought after by later long term enthusiasts.

I am a believer in, the more you wash a car the more you scratch it.
You're washing it wrong then. Should never scratch a car with decent methods. Two personal favorites, metallic blue with pale gray/cream leather is always a winner as long as the dash plastics aren't cream/pale gray too. Alternatively, dark gray metallic with red leather.
Any form of tan interior is exceedingly old man, and if there is any form of wood then you get double old man points and need a flat cap and a box of tissues on the rear parcel shelf. Yes, sorry, even in an Alfa.
