What is the best way of dealing with middle-lane hoggers?

I don't personally find lane hoggers too much of a problem on motorways (SMART or otherwise).
I just get on with where I'm going to & don't let it worry me.
How do you avoid being delayed by the accidents they cause?I just get on with where I'm going to & don't let it worry me.
Works for me.

How do i deal with them?
If i'm in the inside lane, i will undertake them, by virtue of moving faster than them.
If i am i the middle or outside lane i'll overtake them then drop across to the appropriate lane, whether that be the inside lane if its empty or the middle lane if theres vehicles in the inside lane.

They have a choice, they don't have to behave the way they do. They choose to.
I choose not to.

I'm not excusing their behaviour. I'm pointing out that part of the reason they behave that way is a response to how other people are behaving, and that if we could get everyone to use the road more correctly we might stand a chance of fixing it.
While that’s a lovely idea, I think a lot of outside lane residents are there regardless.vonhosen said:

foreigners that there are sat in the middle lane causing traffic is ridiculous.
Foreign plates or just people who 'look a bit foreign' through the window... otolith said:

Correctly starts with not responding poorly to the way others drive. As to using the road correctly, that's doing it in the way that those managing the roads dictate, not our own version that we think amounts to correct.

Foreign plates or just people who 'look a bit foreign' through the window... The L1>L2>L3>L2>L1 brigade have never been on the western bit of the M25 where there are 6 lanes at one point and with a FLM ( fifth lane moron) sitting there. It happens more time than you think L1/2/3/4 empty, 5/6 full of nose to tail nutcases
If you want to go into the next countyin order to do it correctly then off you go.. L1>L2>L3>L4>L5>L6>L5>L4>L3>L2>L1 looks pretty anal doesn't it
Me?sty in L1 he is that far away not to bother me
The only caveat i have is that if the speedo shows more than 75 ( very rarely) then i do go 1/2/3/2/1. otherwise <70 and i sit in L1 irrespective of where they are. plus the new 'smart'M3 now there is an oxymoron. has its own private lane for those wishing to cruise at 70+ guess which one

It depends what I'm driving. They are most of an issue if I'm in a company van (70mph speed limiter) or towing a trailer (so not allowed to use lane 3). I always overtake on the correct side - undertaking someone who is oblivous is a recipe for a crash, and also perpetuates the problem as they then think sitting in the middle lane is the correct thing to do.
They are usually also the brain dead idiots who can't maintain a constant speed and slowly drift up and down between 55 and 80. With the speed limiter that's a real nuisance, and what often happens is that as they see a 5 metre long high-top Sprinter coming past and think "a big van's coming past, I must be going too slow so I'd better speed up a bit". They then accelerate up to 70 and sit in my blind spot about two-thirds of the way down the van matching my speed.
If the van is sign-written (large well known multi-national), the only thing I can then do is drop back and try again later. I've found that following behind a car is often a better bet for them not changing speed than going past on my own.
Once I'm past, I'll keep a good eye on them for a while in the mirror. If it looks like they might come past at some point because their speed is currently in the 70-80 phase and there isn't a deal of traffic, I will pull out into the middle lane to stop them coming past and then slowing down in front of me again. They are the kind of people who think the outside lane is only for BMWs and Audis so they never change lanes to overtake!
