RE: The ?100k Honda NSX: Spotted

There’s a 2004 Type-R going through auction in Japan today I spotted online last night.

Start price is £168k...

I heard many years ago that during the Rover/Honda tie up, they tried a Honda engine in a Metro. After they fitted it, they discovered it had four reverse gears and one forward gear because the engine rotated the other way. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this? It is possible that someone suggested it, but they realised the problem before anything practical was done, but you never know (hand-built by Roberts [Not the nine o'clock news?])

I think the majority of cars are locked away so they can be sold for profit as "classics" later on, not so they can be preserved. It is a nice thought though.

Doesn’t matter. The net result is that the cars still exist and will continue to exist. Take it to the extreme, and do we label museums “shameful” ?

If someone wants to store a classic car then more power to them. In my opinion.

Not sure, old Honda engines did spin the opposite direction to most other stuff I believe so sounds plausible.

I drove my 355 daily in the UK and it worked very well (even commuting in London traffic every day). Having said that, it was an expensive car to run - I probably spent close to the same on servicing and petrol over 2.5 years as the total purchase price (at the time I sold it for 27k .... still one of the more painful days in my life - about the same as when I sold my M Coupe for 15k ....). 2 cars I would love to have back (I had to sell both for financial reasons, so that softens the blow a little)

All the talk of NSX engines being used in Rover 800s has me thinking about what the motoring world would have been like if the 1985 MG EX-E had been put in to production. Aluminium monocoque construction with a mid mounted V6. The concept car at Gaydon looks like a preview for the NSX.

In the US, a 1999 Acura NSX Zanardi edition recently sold for almost $180k (135k GBP) - it had 22k miles on the clock. The Zanardi edition is a sort of half-way house between the standard car and the JDM-only Type S, and came in a limited edition of 50 cars - an extra 1 was given to Alex Zanardi to commemorate his CART championship seasons.
Being a 1999 model, it is of the pre-facelift design with the pop-up lights, and is "rare" by US standards for being an NA2 coupe (most US cars post 1994 are Targas), and consequently the North Americans go mad for this car.

Quite apart from whether you think the NSX is any good or not, or if you think it's worth £100k, this particular car is a very good one. The original owner used it well and was absolutely fastidious; he used to clean the underside if it ever got wet and it was in absolutely stunning condition.

I don't like white cars generally, but as a fan (and ex-owner) of the NSX, I told the original owner that his is the only other NSX I would want to buy.

I would press the current vendor hard on both their description (it's not a one-owner car at all - It's had at least 2 owners and has been up for sale previously...) and on the servicing it has received as it's not been used for the last 2+ years.

Only worth what simeone will pay. At £100k you can buy one or more other very nice collectable cars. I'm not into nsx prices deeply but it seems crazy to believe someone would pay anywhere near that much for one?

You can say that about lots of cars though. I personally wouldn't buy a Sierra cosworth for £10k but some will pay £100k.

This NSX is 'cheap' in the grand scheme of things, an NSX-R would cost twice the price (I reckon)

(Oh, and there were 3 pages of "POA" and telephone-number cars before you got to ones with only mildly ridiculous asking prices. Half of them weren't even RSs or other lightweight / special / homologation cars, either)
