What a fabulous article, I literally found myself slipping into the back seat of the car.

It is coming up to almost a year since I took my 45 year old De Tomaso on a 1,200 mile jaunt into France. My fears had been very similar to yours. I'd booked the very best level of AA cover, I had a box filled with bottles, and spares, and tools in my passenger footwell. I made it off the ferry, I even made it to Le Mans. I got far too excited and absolutely hammered it along those roads in the Loire Valley you mention. Back on the motorway, wind it back, and all the way to the Dordogne. There followed the most glorious long weekend of driving sensational roads, a wave in every village, the occasional exultant arm waggle and blown kiss, a fan around every corner.

And at the end of the day, what broke, my gearknob, hardly a hardship.

To all those worried about getting a classic into Europe, don't, just do it, have confidence in the old girl.

Great article, after I read it through I had a moment daydreaming of being back on the Alpine passes I drove last year in my E9 and then eating up the miles on the Autobahn in my E32

I have taken three of my older BMWs into Europe so far, three trouble-free trips and two breakdowns to date, both of which happened to be on the last two trips with each of the cars pictured above. ADAC membership was invaluable on both occasions. We are off across Europe again in September but I have given in and we're taking the wife's F30 this time. Boo!!!
