I think it's reasonable review-
Yaris- more track biased spec with those components.
Fiesta- More aimed at being a daily.

I think the challenge is the Yaris in terms of finding a competitor that is as focused. Modern hot hatches like the ST are intended to be more rounded, do it all, type cars. For the committed PHer the Yaris is the best choice but for 99% of people the ST is.
Cooper S GP seems like a natural competitor for me, more so if the Yaris is NLA new

I would love the Yaris. Shame they only sold like 26 of them. I think it's worth the premium for what it is. It's like a Mini JCW GP edition in a way.

GRMN doesn't either technically, wasn't there only 100 for the UK (400 for Europe in total), and the UK allocation is all sold?

Gods teeth, I must be antediluvian, when did a Fiesta become a £24k car or more to the point when did it become ‘worth’ £24k?
I have a (weird) theory that car prices rise in line with the transfer costs and wages of Premier League prima donnas....

It's that pesky inflation. 24k GBP in 2017 was "only" 16.5k GBP in 2004.

I have to wonder why you spent 50% of the testing time on a track with cars like these ?
We tagged along with Autocar Junior Handling Day for this test, which had two days on track and one on road. Hopefully that explains it!

We're hoping to get a long-term Fiesta ST at some point though, so plenty more road impressions should follow.

Cheers!

Why is there a skateboardist in one of the photos?
Er... That's Mitch the videographer! He was in the right place at the right time for the photo and so I put the photo in. He's anything but a skateboardist though laugh

I totally get the review.

As much as i really like the ST, i'd have to choose the Yaris. Reminds me so much of the 182 Trophy.

fiesta sounds better and I think I'd prefer the ultra quick steering rack etc
the mountune package is near to being announced and is suspected to be 225bhp
still would pick the yaris though I think

Whilst the Fiesta perhaps looks a bit "grown up" compared to the previous one, this car will be a great success.

The Yaris on the other hand looks just plain rubbish and at that price....they will sell somewhere close to none in the UK...
Yaris GRMN is limited edition its not a mass produced car. Apparently only 80 will be shipped to the UK. (And all 80 have been sold)

Not really sure why the yaris has been featuring in lots of magazine tests recently since you can't buy them and is more like a track car...

26 grand seems a lot, that's i30N territory, suppose its immaterial if they sold them all though.

Agreed. Hence my point - saying the GP was a natural competitor as the Yaris is NLA, when the GP doesnt exist.

Its a bit like comparing the Audi TT, Boxster and Elise. The Elise is the best driver's car but the other two are much better as an all round proposition.
I’d suggest the nearest competitor to the Yaris is the Abarth 695 Biposto 960kg 190bhp LSD optional dog ring box and datalogger and optional Perspex Windows. Although starting at £30k and max price about £50k there’s certainly a lot of better cars but in that segment of small hatches it’s got to be close to the top.

I’m also surprised that Pistonheads decided to list lots of cars except the abarth 595. Like the fiesta it’s available in 3 different tunes including an optional mechanical LSD. The Competizione starts at £20,890 which gets you 180bhp in something that weighs 1060kg.

It may not be the best car in that segment but to not even list it seems a bit of an oversight.

And I’d take the Yaris over the Fiesta. I finally saw one in the flesh in Malmedy, Belgium last week. Looked great.

Why isn’t the Toybota referred to as the Yaris SatNav, I just can’t help but see GaRMiN every time I see an article on them....
