I love a nippy little hatch/super mini as much as anyone. But why people are paying these prices for "small" cars is mental to me, I find £26k for a Yaris extremely offensive and absurd!

So the GRMN drives better in every way but in summary the Fiesta is the better overall car, because advertising.
I got this impression. Heaps of praise for the Yaris but somehow I knew that by the end the Fiesta would ‘win’.

So you didn’t test the ST against a 208 GTI because they aren’t available new in dealerships any more, so the only ones available are hundreds of second hand or nearly new ones. So instead you test it against a limited production car that is basically impossible to buy unless you’re willing to pay massively over the odds for from someone who was in the right place at the right time and managed to buy one?

And couldnt test against a Cooper S because the wheels on the demo car were once inch too big. rolleyes

Seems like the comparison was made purely so that the ST would win overall with the rationale that it’s a “great all rounder” that has “grown up a bit”. Ford paying extra cash for that maybe? Rename the site Fordheads and make it official!

What a piece of st.

Subaru's from 25 years ago had this level of power, and accelerated harder. What with technology getting cheaper, these things should go much harder and cost much less money.

Welcome to 1992.

Oh dear God please tell me you're not serious?

Your £18,000 Subaru in 1992 translates to £35,413.62 after inflation

https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/in...

A Fiesta ST-1 can be bought for half that.

Your £35K in todays money will buy you a car with +50-75% more BHP, a world of additional safety kit and a world of additional kit.

Converting it back, that £17,500 Fiesta ST-1 would have cost approx £9,000 back in 1992, so half the price of the Subaru.

Comical. Do you understand the concepts of 'time', 'inflation' and 'primary school maths'?

£35k would get you a Golf R and a few grand left over for a remap, insurance and some fuel.

THAT is good value smile

Same here. Toyota has a better engine, steering, much more better for track duties and is more fun. Still lost. Well, it happens for toyota all the time. I already know that this little toyota will be a classic in the future.

Why does some utter codpiece always pull out the inflation thing, like it's as simple as that. How come a new basic car was 6k in 1992 and a new basic car is the same today.

I can think of 2 from the same brand, well, as it was then and as it is now.

Yes, the inflation trope is ridiculous. In Australia, the WRX (not the sti) has been $39,990 for the last thousand years. So much for the inflation discussion.

And in the UK, it was, what, £20k for a long time. Can you even buy the base WRX here now?

Erm, because its the most significant reason for the difference in cost?

Your £18K back in 1992 is worth roughly half that today.

And on top of all that, generally speaking cars are :-

  • Faster
  • Safer with far more safety kit.
  • Far higher specification
Sorry you cant grasp basic economics.

The Yaris Grmn is Vile it looks like it crashed through every aisle of Halfords on its way out. Seen one on the road last week driven by some guy who was about 40 he looked ridiculous in it. Looked Like he had borrowed his 17yr old sons pimped out 1.0 Yaris.
