I'd take the original CLS with the 55k engine.
Thought about that, then went for the 5.0. Couldn't see me using the extra oomph (heresy on Pistonheads, I know) but two years in, I'm very happy with it. Stunning looks, prices bottoming, bound to go up. Probably after I sell it.

Current family hack. Gets around the CLS practicalities by having an extra 5th seat and a good size boot (boot size sits between the C and E class wagons in terms of size, though the lights and styling cut into the practicality; I wouldn't call it an estate)

New, this 350D would have been a solid £60,000 car with options so it took a solid £1000+ a month value hit over the first three years. It'll be 5 later this year and should be around £15ks worth then. Personally, I think it's a hell of a thing for the money, it'll do all the family things you'd ever want as well as any family car while looking great, driving well and arriving at any destination without making you feel like you've had an ordeal.

I don't think they're for everyone, and you can certainly buy a better drivers car for the money, but I can't think of anything that I'd actually want to change it for at the moment, at any budget.

Many thanks

Issue with black and that shape is that at looks truly awful when filthy. I've never been too concerned around bodywork on a car before but I had this one properly cleaned up, detailed and ceramic coated, it now goes a few weeks between washes while still looking sharp. If I were buying one again I'd probably look out for the dark blue or metallic red they do as it looks superb in those shades. Black ones outnumber that colour 10 to 1 though and it's not exactly a common car.

This article prompted me to look in the classifieds, where the cheapest 6 series GC is £16k. That's a lot of car for that money, albeit with a 313bhp 3.0 Diesel engine. Still though...
The Passat CC (or just CC as it was later known) could be had with 4 or 5 seats, but it just wasn't special enough compared to a standard Passat. Identical from a drivers perspective, unfortunately, where boredom was a common cause of accidents.
The original CLS was a shape I despised when launched; it reminded me of an Oldsmobile from the mid 80's. I think they've aged very badly. The 2nd generation were much better, and the 'Kombi' version as shown above is a great looking car (in my opinion).
Didn't the Mazda 323f describe itself as a coupe even through it had 5 doors? And the Rover P5 Coupe a little earlier (always had a soft spot for those).

I always thought the issue with a coupe (regardless of the number of doors...?), was the space in the rear seat. We have young kids, and I ran a 2 door coupe for quite some time, but even though I loved mine to bits, I eventually had to give it up and buy a 4 door with space, etc etc etc.

How do these cars stack up for space? I don't just mean for kids, but what is it like for adults? Also, what about space for luggage? Before I give up a traditional sedan for a 4 door coupe, I would expect them to be at least as practical.

I also must say, talking about a £20k coupe vs a £25k sedan and the difference of £5k, seems a little unusual in an article where another car is over £100k. Context. Fair enough, you're showing us a few different price points. But personally, I wouldn't give up the practicality of a proper 4 door sedan in order to save £5k. Maybe that's why the market has followed a similar path.
I have an M6GC in Silverstone Blue.
Everyone who sees it loves it - even when compared to my previous M5 of the same era.
It has 4 proper adult seats with proper leg room. Kids will need booster seats to see out though and head room is tight in the back seats for mates who are over 6ft tall due to the raked roofline.
its worth a look
Thanks Trev, I appreciate the reply from someone who's actually been there and done it.

Maybe the followup question would be, if you had to do it all over again, would you buy the coupe version over the sedan again?
Hi !

The M6GC is a far better looking vehicle than the M5 (and the M6 coupe) to my mind. The seemingly longer wheel base makes the car seem more resolved to look at to my eyes.

The interior of the M6GC is a more special place to sit than all but the highest spec M5s as the whole interior has extended leather. Mine also has the B&O sound system which pops up on the top of the dash - which my kids think is cool.

They all depreciate at a ridiculous rate from new over 3 years. For me the svelte lines of the m6GC made it a no brainer when i got rid of the m5.

I saw my first one in gunmetal /singapore grey on the cark park outside the main stands at leMans in June 2015, and though - im having one of those.

Mine is Silverstone blue as my old E39 M5 was Silverstone blue and i loved it.

In short. I bought the M6GC as soon as it made economic sense for me and have been delighted with my purchase ever since.

i love the 6GC, its so perfectly proportioned.

I picked up my Panamera 4s last week. For such a huge car its a shame to some it has 4 seats but it doesn't bother me.

technically speaking though, its not a 4 seater coupe - it has a hatchback? and would a coupe mean the doors are pillar-less, which the panamera also isn't.
