Yes, it does, actually. the 8 is based upon the 7 series, not the 5....like the 6 series was (and like the 8 series of the 90's was based on the 7 series). So in that historical sense, it has more in common with the old 8 series than the 6....
Slightly off topic, but aren't the 7-series and 5-series based on the same platform anyway? It looks a lot nicer than the coupe.
The rear on the coupe was questionable as it looks like it got a lot wider in the rear quarter as it had one door, this is stretched and suits the shape more, I don’t know how to word it properly but this looks like it will have a lot more road presence than the outgoing GC.

In the same way the last 6 series had nothing to do with the 6 series in the 80's?

OK, this makes sense then. Yes, it does, actually. the 8 is based upon the 7 series, not the 5....like the 6 series was (and like the 8 series of the 90's was based on the 7 series). So in that historical sense, it has more in common with the old 8 series than the 6....
I didn't realise that the new 8 series would be based on the 7 series. I take back my previous words

Eh? The E63 6 Series was based on a 5 Series platform, just like the original.Yes, it does, actually. the 8 is based upon the 7 series, not the 5....like the 6 series was (and like the 8 series of the 90's was based on the 7 series).
The E31 had nothing in common with a 7 Series of any sort, engine apart.
As for the new 8 Coupe, how did they go from the stunning Astonesque beauty of the concept to this fking thing? Door handles from a 1998 Focus, rear bumper from some rice rocket and a general '6 Series from 2011' look to the rear end. And of course there's a diesel to suck the last vestige of exotica from it. This will go the same way as the last 6 Series, massive discounts whilst buyers go for a secondhand Aston or a Maserati. BMW could have really pulled something amazing out of the bag with this. What a shame.

Even as a very much non BMW fan that 'concept' 8 looks stunning and the real one just f*****g gash.I mean...
I have to agree, the end product, while not entirely dissimilar, is something of a disappointment. I get that things like pedestrian safety regulations had a part to play (particularly around the nose as that concept front end would never have made production), not to mention the need to have a lot more air going into the radiators than the concept would have probably allowed but still, it was magnificent...

That looks rather long, heavy and a bit overhang rich. However, was the ad placement cheeky & deliberate, accidental, or just suggesting some mystery around the soon to be popular love you crash test dummy massage seat option that may be on the BM but not on the Merc equivalent (you need to zoom in on the pic).
