Hmm, looks a bit Meh,

I think the 6 is a handsome beast, but an 8 needs much more presence.

They could have "evolved" the i8 kinda look if anything...
Last time BMW moved to an edgy design for their mainstream cars they took 5yrs of grief.

Yes, it does, actually. the 8 is based upon the 7 series, not the 5....like the 6 series was (and like the 8 series of the 90's was based on the 7 series). So in that historical sense, it has more in common with the old 8 series than the 6....
Slightly off topic, but aren't the 7-series and 5-series based on the same platform anyway?
Yeah I thought they were all but the same. Suppose it sounds better to some marketing wonk and a good way extracting more cash from gullible consumers.

It looks a lot nicer than the coupe.

The rear on the coupe was questionable as it looks like it got a lot wider in the rear quarter as it had one door, this is stretched and suits the shape more, I don’t know how to word it properly but this looks like it will have a lot more road presence than the outgoing GC.

OK, this makes sense then.
I didn't realise that the new 8 series would be based on the 7 series. I take back my previous words

Eh? The E63 6 Series was based on a 5 Series platform, just like the original.

The E31 had nothing in common with a 7 Series of any sort, engine apart.

"Gran Coupe" sounds like a mobility scooter with a roof for old ladies.

Was this 4 door bloater supposed to be anything like the 8 series from the 90’s ?
But why call it an 8 series then? Just continue using the 6-series name...
Because Marketing.

As for the new 8 Coupe, how did they go from the stunning Astonesque beauty of the concept to this fking thing? Door handles from a 1998 Focus, rear bumper from some rice rocket and a general '6 Series from 2011' look to the rear end. And of course there's a diesel to suck the last vestige of exotica from it. This will go the same way as the last 6 Series, massive discounts whilst buyers go for a secondhand Aston or a Maserati. BMW could have really pulled something amazing out of the bag with this. What a shame. confused

Even as a very much non BMW fan that 'concept' 8 looks stunning and the real one just f*****g gash.

I mean...

I have to agree, the end product, while not entirely dissimilar, is something of a disappointment. I get that things like pedestrian safety regulations had a part to play (particularly around the nose as that concept front end would never have made production), not to mention the need to have a lot more air going into the radiators than the concept would have probably allowed but still, it was magnificent...

Looks tall and ungainly, like the 6 Series Gran Turismo. The 6 Series Gran Coupé looks far sleeker.

Maybe just the pics, because it's actually shorter (height) than the 6 and just as wide (marginally wider) so shouldn't look as tall by any means.

Looks more like a huge version of a 4 series GranCoupé, rather than an evolution of the elegant outgoing 6GC. I’m not a fan, and I’ve tried to like the new 8, because I’ve always liked big BMs.

This is a fine example of why I much prefer 2dr Coupes. If you really want/need a 4dr go for a 5 or 7 series instead for me. Its a shame because the old 6GC was attractive for a 4dr in fairness, even though I did always prefer the proper Coupe overall.

That looks rather long, heavy and a bit overhang rich. However, was the ad placement cheeky & deliberate, accidental, or just suggesting some mystery around the soon to be popular love you crash test dummy massage seat option that may be on the BM but not on the Merc equivalent (you need to zoom in on the pic).

Sometimes I think I'm not meant for these times.

A line-up with front wheel drive zafira looking things, an M-badge on every 2.0 diesel you see and now a four door 8er.

It's all just so thoroughly depressing.
