RE: BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe first look
Discussion
Same platform yes, but the newer G series cars from 3 series on will be based on the CLAR (that applies to the X3 onwards models as well). The new 1 and 2 (and X1 and 2) will/do share UKL1 or 2 platform with the Mini range.
That is where the similarities really stop as the G30/31 5 series get aluminium instead of carbon fibre for certain areas which only the 7 and 8 benefit from (carbon core as BMW market it). The new 3 will not doubt have other cost cutting to reduce costs.

Sometimes I think I'm not meant for these times.
A line-up with front wheel drive zafira looking things, an M-badge on every 2.0 diesel you see and now a four door 8er.
It's all just so thoroughly depressing.
Don't worry, if enough people don't buy them, they'll stop making them.A line-up with front wheel drive zafira looking things, an M-badge on every 2.0 diesel you see and now a four door 8er.

Is that a Kia Stinger copy?
And that raises another question..........Kia, Hyundai etc are not sat on their arses daydreaming about the day they can compete with BMW. They're on their way right now. This is why BMW badly need a true halo model, something you would actually cross the road to gawp at. With the 2 Series Active ZafiraMax garbage and the hordes or 320d's as well as bigger hordes of the forthcoming FWD 1 Series, people might just start seriously comparing BMW with something far cheaper and probably more reliable from Korea and think ..hang on a minute...

After all that hype of there being a fresh new model called the 8 series, its just a new 6 series Gran Coupe.
That is literally it. There's no more to it. It has absolutely nothing to do with the original 8 series from the 90s
Shame on BMW for associating the iconic 8 series name for this generically designed twaddle. That is literally it. There's no more to it. It has absolutely nothing to do with the original 8 series from the 90s

It's not a real 8 series unless it has pop up head lights and sports an almost unnoticed kidney grill.
But we all know mediocrity and mass appeal wins the day, so I'm sure this abomination will sell well.

By your logic a 3 series isn't a 3 series without a shark nose

I get that no car styling is all things to all, but to me, I can't see how that can be ugly/gopping/f*cking gash/horrendous/etc. It may not be to someones tase, they might not think it beautiful, they might not even think it is in anyway attractive, but ugly/gopping/etc?I'd be genuinely interested, for those who think the new 8 is such an offensively ugly abomination, what current car sits at this opposite end of the spectrum to be beautiful/etc?

Exactly. I had one 15-20 years ago and despite being a flop due to being a ludicrous amount of money, they were unique for a BMW and very desirable in a way BMW's aren't now. They were pretty much irreplaceable whereas this one is basically a 6 Series continuation. I'm sure it's pleasant enough though. But we all know mediocrity and mass appeal wins the day, so I'm sure this abomination will sell well.

As with the Z4, I personally don't like it and indeed I might go so far as to use the word "ugly"... but only in a mild rather generic sort of way. It's certainly not offensive. iSore said:

But given your comments that despite the 'true' 8-series being a flop, they were more desirable.... What should BMW have done to launch a more halo product?
