No, I just observe the clues. As I said, if nothing is ahead, you watch the car beside and any hints that it may move across. It really is that simple. Obviously too complex for some though.

There are some useful tests for that

One of those two lanes in two out roundabout things where just afterwards the person in L1 moves into L2 to pass a truck ahead, not realising L2 may be already occupied (blindspot)

Or they just drive straight across, oblivious to the car in L2 that they are cutting up.
