The awkward gaps around the black plastic cover adjacent to the folded hood, the prominent almost eye level petrol cap door & very ordinary door handle pull seems to me evidence that little thought has been given to detailing. All a bit clumsy which I hope does not extend elsewhere.
It may be an old design but I agree with another poster that compared with the Mercedes SLC it's no class act.
Perhaps the emphasis will be on outright sportiness with hard ride & huge silly wheels, not that it matters as many will buy it because of the badge.
Let's hope its too macho for feminine women.

So the plot thickens...

Z3 & MX5 wanted to be a Lotus Elan
Old Z4 desperately wanted to be a German Aston
New Z4 looks like an S2000, which was a Jap Vantage wannabe
Abarth wants to be the Aston wannabe SLC, but is a Jap MX5
New Vantage front looks like an MX5

Conclusion, wait for new Elise, have the best of both worlds, a New front engined Luxury Elan, that looks like an Aston.

Then you can drive past all those snobby porpers crying in their boken down BMW's stranded at the side of the road.

Not sure if you're being serious or not? An Elise is a TOTALLY different proposition to a Z4. More people prefer the Z4 proposition, hence the Z4 sells a heck of a lot better than the Elise.

I owned the E85 Z4 light weight, simple interior and looked great. Owned it for 5 years loved it despite the horrible run flat tyres / firm ride (later resolved by replacing with non run-flats) . The E89 3.0 double clutch was a mistake weighed 1525kg vs 1290kg of my 3.0 Auto. Didn't bother replacing it with the E89.

BMW don't seem to have the weight loss focus needed.

I won't write off the new model just yet but it better be a massive improvement over the heavy weight E89.

Compared to who? They're competing, largely, against Mercedes and Audi. I wouldn't say they're heavier than those, are they? Or certainly not by much....

Geely wants to turn Lotus into a luxury Porsche rival, this new better handling BMW Z4 is aimed smack bang at Porsche Boxster/Cayman, the Elise as we know it is dead, its not profitable enough. I can totally see why Geely are making a SUV, they are chasing big sales, which is also what this new Z4 and the new Elise/Elan will want. On the plus side there might be a lighter Lotus Elise "GT4RS" style car.

I don't necessarily think there needs to be another weight focused manufacturer for BMW to compare to for them to look at that area, just because their competitors don't focus on it doesn't mean they can't.

Granted the issue with lightweight is that sometimes this affects quality or audible road noise, this doesn't exactly fit with the prestige image so I understand why they may not.

Z3 & MX5 wanted to be a Lotus Elan The Elan was several levels up in it's era costing more like a Boxster/F-TYpe in todays money...so whilst the original MX5 was inspired by the look/feel of an Elan... neither wanted to BE a Lotus Elan
Old Z4 desperately wanted to be a German Aston Old Z4 was/is a lot smaller than any Aston...are you thinking Z8 perhaps?
New Z4 looks like an S2000, which was a Jap Vantage wannabe no it doesn't at all, and how was the S2000 a Jap Vantage wannabe???
Abarth wants to be the Aston wannabe SLC, but is a Jap MX5 The Abarth is an Italian MX5, the MX5 is a Jap MX5 wink, I can't untangle the Aston/SLC wannabe BS
New Vantage front looks like an MX5 no it doesn't... headlights show a similar shape/angle etc, but no....

So messed up, put the bottle down. The new Elise will be a luxury front engine'd thing that looks like an Aston? and be better built than a BMW?
Well I sort of hope you're right....even though I know it's laughable..
10/10 for entertainment though thumbup

If I could buy a brand new E85 Z4 with the M54B30 I would, over this new thing.

The sports car should be a bit out there. This is kinda what you’d expect.

The concept was a turd too imo.

Each to their own I guess. That just looks bland to me. I prefer the colour in the original article.

Bangle did challenging and cohesive, a design that grew on you with a lot of depth.

I can’t see this growing on me.

It’s only challenging because it’s terrible. I see no hidden charm.

BMW have gone full on market led, rather than leading the market.

Rather than making an amazing product and telling consumers ‘this is amazing, you’ll love it’, they seem to just appease the widest demographic and make a bland turd.
bingo

In fairness the E86 coupe is a lot better looking than the roadster.

Looks like I'll be keeping mine for a few more years ... shame, thought about the upgraded model as I like the concept of the closed desk B58.

Much nicer. The 'sweet spot' of Z4 IMO
