So apart from needing a complete engine rebuild and a thorough overhaul of every other component at around 60k miles it's been faultless?
Difficult to argue with that logic!
Mind you, let's not forget that it wasn't that long ago that Porsche issued a "Do not drive in case the engine catastrophically explodes in a fireball" directive to all owners of their flagship model, yet such inept engineering still didn't effect sales. So it's reasonable to suggest that there is a lot of blinkered fanboism about the brand.
i don't recall say the car has been faultless, so no lack of logic to be brought into question. Difficult to argue with that logic!

it is a great car though from a practicality perspective. i can take it anywhere, park it anywhere, and generally just treat it like a daily driver (i use it mainly for airport runs as i now have an old classic for 'fun driving')

I have a Maserati gt & a 997 c2s. Both great cars, admittedly the maser was nearly double the price of the 997 but the gt feels so special every time you get in it. Completely different cars despite people comparing one to the other.
I want to trade up to a 997 turbo but it won't be for the maser.
i probably will get a GT at some stage in the next couple of years. it would need to be a 4.7s and i don't really want a MC Shift. I want to trade up to a 997 turbo but it won't be for the maser.
i completely agree about them being so much more special than a 911 and an event each time you drive in one. this in itself can be both good and bad i guess.
as for comparisons, when you are in the market for a 'performance' 2+2 in the +/-£30k bracket, the list becomes quite short
Porsche 911
Maserati GT
Bentley Conti GT
Mercedes CL
Aston DB9 (back seats are not really usable - same for the Jaguar XKR)
If I worked a little harder, I could just into a warranted Ferrari FF and then everything would be fine... but I'm not one for working too hard.

Just pay the premium for a Gen2 car it has completely new engine without the IMS.
Because I'm too lazy to look myself, roughly what would you expect to pay for a Gen2 997?The Surveyor said:

Virtually every performance car has it's foibles, the M96/97 issues are overblown albeit they do actually exist & Porsche could perhaps have handled it better.
Which sub-100K sports car (e.g. Audi R8 or GTR) has had as big an issue as the 996/997?Pistonheads is really changing.
The cost of that half-rebuild on the flat six lump makes a full rebuild on the fabulous Speed 6 look like a bargain IMHO.
When TVR were producing them, it was a joke. The were plenty of case detailed on this forum of engines going pop at less than 30K miles.
My personal review is that a TVR is going to be so unreliable you'd be better off comparing them against classic cars from the 1960s onwards, rather than a modern sports car. However I've never owned one so maybe in reality they will be as reliable as a Lexus.

Can an S6 be rebuilt to be reasonably reliable (e.g. 80K between rebuilds)?

Yes you can speak to the guys at TVR power. When TVR were producing them, it was a joke. The were plenty of case detailed on this forum of engines going pop at less than 30K miles.

I would love one of these and could afford the lay out for the car, I’d just be scared of the regular garage visits and leaving it anywhere.
It would take the fun out of owning it I think.
The article focussed quite a lot on the mechanical gremlins, amazing to hear from a Porsche which you’d assume would be bullet-proof.
Or am I just being a wimp?
