Having owned a mk7 Golf GTI, and currently owning a 7.5 R, what a lot of non-owners fail to see is just how *complete* the Golf is. Compared even to the A3, the Golf is SIGNIFICANTLY better as a package. Everything has been thought about and there are no features that annoy the driver or make you think "Why did they do that?". It sounds madness when I type it, because I've never really liked VSs, but I ditched a W12 Bentley for the Golf and I could have bought pretty much any car for sale today. It's genuinely that good.

That's what the newcomers have to deal with, on top of excellent dynamics and true everyday usability. It's also the bit that an hour reviewing a car won't give you.
Everyone is different but having sampled various Golfs from the GTi, to the R, to the 1.6TDi I really don't get the appeal. They are in no way comparible to an executive car for NVH or comfort - christ you can even see the door paint on the frames inside Golfs which smacks of budget car. Audi at least trim the door frame so you don't.The steering wheel doesn't reach out far enough on th Golfs like they do in an M4, M5 etc

Driving wise the R is extremely fast and capable but so are many hot hatches which happen to feel more focussed or sporting.

I'm sorry but I just don't rate them as a car as so many others do. Factor in the variable VW quality - the excellent reliability of the Hyundai range and I suspect the Honda type R or Hyundai would get the nod.

I had a Golf 7R. Loved it. It got replaced by a S3 Saloon, which as as overall package just irritated me - compared with the Golf, the interior felt spartan and poorly packaged , the driving experience felt insulated and numb and the ergonomics were annoying.

The S3 was replaced with a Golf 7.5R Estate, and I never once wished that I had the S3 back.
