Where are people finding usable ones for under a grand? I'm trying to decide whether to fix my WJ, sell it or get a tow car and make it a true off-roader, not seen anything under £1k that I've been tempted to go and have a look at yet.

SOTW isn't a Cherokee, it's a Grand Cherokee.

The greeny/blue one in the picture is a late model Cherokee XJ. You see a lot more of them than the earlier boxier ones as they massively improved the corrosion resistance on them.

The one Ma' Fratelli drove in The Goonies is an early one.

Most notable thing on the early ones for me was Jeeps attempt to get every single control onto one indicator stalk wink

Yeh that’s why I’ve always wanted one after watching the Goonies hundreds of times as a kid I’ve always thought they looked so cool. Thanks for the info yeh it’s the Cherokee XJ I like i was bidding on one on eBay last year but pulled out when the bidding reached 1k and I’ve never bothered since but seen one entering a retail car park a few weeks back which sounded like a muscle car and it looked great. So I now want one again to run along side my ST just to scratch the itch. Probably going to be hard finding a decent one for under 1k though.
I always thought the one in the shed of the week was the newer facelift model to the XJ didn’t realise it was a totally different model. Need to do my homework I think.

SOTW hits a new low, last weeks 306 D Turbo was bad but a shagged out SUV.

Perhaps it's time to revamp for the format if this is as Pistonheads as it gets.

Remember, Speed (and style used to) Matter!!!
I think maybe you're missing the point of SOTY. Yes, it stands for "SHED" of the week, not "Sportscar" of the week.

Personally whilst its not my cup of tea, stuff like this old Jeep are what Shed is about.
Where did I say Sports car? Yes I dislike SUVs (with a passion) and diesel cars (which are overly dirty).

It does seem that SOTW has become less interesting.

Perhaps the interesting old cars have now become more valuable and no longer qualify for SOTW.

I'm quite sure anything I suggested wouldn't suit your 'unique' taste in cars! biggrin

Had the v8 overland addition of next reiteration of the Grand Cherokee. Nearly unstoppable with the quadra trac 2 system however interior was awful, fuel economy none existent and electrically frail. Still loved it!

Had to look back and see if it was you that I'd replied to last week. This section, and essentially any interest in vehicles, is not for you.

Go and buy a Golf R on a PCP deal this weekend and tell all your friends on Facebook about it's 0-60.
School finished early today?

Have you ever owned a car?

Cannot comment on the earlier model but had our 05' WK 3.0CRD for the past 5 years, been a solid reliable workhorse unlike our friends newish Discovery! and pulls our Brian James race trailer without even breaking a sweat, electrics can be quirky, love it and would buy another!
I ran a WK for 2.5 years and loved it. The 3.0 CRD is a great engine. Interior plastics are cheap looking, but 11 years after leaving the factory they look the exact same as the day they left.

Mine felt bomb proof and pretty much go anywhere.

I have had a couple of late 1990s 4.0 litre Jeeps.

Engines are bombproof and sound good, too. Miles better than the hopeless 4 pot petrol and diesel versions.

20mpg on a run, down to 15mpg around town.

Very comfortable old chariots, though the handling was pants.

Very capable off road.

Read diffs are made of chocolate. Expect sagging springs and problems with ABS. Bulbs and electrics are queer US type and hard to find.

Central locking and immobiliser are problematic, difficult to by-pass and have to be re-programmed at a main dealer. Dealers are thin on the ground and expensive.

The heater/ventilation system is operated by vacuum, which fails when the hoses perish, but they are very cheap and easy to fix.

In my view, the smaller Cherokee is more attractive prospect and miles better than a Land Rover.

I have a lot of time for these old Jeeps.

I sold this 75000 miles ages ago for £750, so the SOTW is rather expensive.

Chrysler’s immobilisers for the UK (maybe whole EU?) were rubbish, as you say.

However sagging back end is more an XJ Cherokee than ZJ Grand Cherokee problem. These have coils all round while an XJ like yours had leaf springs on the back (as I’m sure you know; I’m just highlighting the difference)

Was it this era of Jeep that featured in The TV show Bugs? Seem to remember they had one in BRG that looked pretty good:

Had one of these, not in any sense spacious but they drive very well with good brakes and suprisingly neat handling, especially if you had driven a contemporary G wagen or rolypoly LandRover, liked it a lot !

We'll try to contain the excitement. Although I've never seen an auto in that gen Celica.

Had one of these a few years back and absolutely love but the fuel consumption meant it had to go. Im a fully trained and qualified mechanic of many years standing and can truthfully say there was no mechanical problem with this vehicle, long run 19-20mpg, around town where it got most use 4-5 mpg.

The best looking of all the Grand Cherokees. In USA the 5.9 versions are ready available, I'd love one. Shame there's none for sale in UK.

I've noticed a few comments creeping in over the weeks, criticising the SOTW. I think the only bad pick would be something that doesn't generate debate, so I reckon they're still on track and keep them coming!
