They still have a chassis... it's just welded to the floorpan, so not really a Moncoque in the modern sense.

Yes, that is fair to say. I was probably speaking more literally. I think Jeep calls it UniFrame. Kind of a blend of the two - a chassis integrated into the body which also provides its own structure. ]

The 4.0 is a really good towing engine - plenty of torque from the bottom and a tough automatic gearbox. Not fast but they easily pull heavy trailers
Good to know. Thanks white_goodman said:
I didn't use mine for towing but it has low down torque (230 lb ft at 3000rpm) and can supposedly tow 6500 pounds. Ladder frame too, so should be strong enough. I wouldn't say it would be any worse than something like a Discovery/Discovery 2 diesel but a V8 would be better.
A V8 is always better Konan said:
I suspect it'd be transmission cooling that'd be the worry before you bother the engine too much.
190bhp and torque for 1000rpm on the 4.0.
I'd hope trans should be OK? It seems like any car with a towing kit has additional trans coolers, but I can't work out if that's US only. 190bhp and torque for 1000rpm on the 4.0.

I tow up to about 1500Kg with an XJ with just the standard cooler (built into the rad) and it really doesn't phase it. Live in Norfolk, so I don't often see a sustained incline, but I just drop it to 3rd if I think it'll be slipping the convertor.
If anything, I figure the grand may be a little better as the regular Cherokee is a little on the light side.

In the US, you could get a tow spec with additional trans cooling and (i think) a lower diff ratio. There's a lot of talk of having to beef up the trans but i also get the feeling they're talking about towing 3000lbs up the side of a mountain. Also - the tow capacity they list on some UK cars is insane. To the point I think there's some truth in the legend that they forgot to convert klbs to Kg!

1500kg won't bother an XJ at all. Double that should work too.I tow up to about 1500Kg with an XJ with just the standard cooler (built into the rad) and it really doesn't phase it. IIRC the diesel's limit is 2500kg, 2.5 petrol is 3150kg and 4.0 is 3250kg

As the owner of a ZJ for the past 8 years I would lake to say that when it comes to towing, I'm not sure I would want tow how much over 2000kg.
The 4.0 is pretty underpowered in all honesty but the biggest issue is the brakes. They are simply not up to the job of heavy towing.
Oh yes, I forgot about that. The brakes were crap! The 4.0 is pretty underpowered in all honesty but the biggest issue is the brakes. They are simply not up to the job of heavy towing.
