RE: A45 vs GT R: The Mercedes-AMG Acid Test

I think while you're right, none of that affects the sensations from behind the wheel. I don't drive a car through a corner and think "hmm, is my warranty in place". The flip side of your point would be, okay, no warranty (old car), so you buy it for less money up front. To that I would say, so what?
Back to the point. The article says "But which end of Affalterbach's extensive range best defines it in 2018?" in the headline, doesn't it? I still don't see a definitive answer to the articles own question???
Yup. Agreed on all fronts. And likewise if you were buying an A45 new you could buy an approved used c63 anyway. In fact I've seen approved used c63s around £30kBack to the point. The problem with the C63 is the same as much of the AMG kit, it’s a bit of a tool chariot. At least the A AMG is a much rarer spot but that rear aero needs to be binned.
The GT is an incredible piece of kit but as the review alludes to, its dimensions mean that it’s virtually undrivable in the UK as a GT.

Older A45s are a tool chariot too. Especially if you see one with the decals and the full aero kit doing lunatic undertakes.Funnily enough most of the time the newer ones you see will be in a subtle colour being driven really slowly. I guess the demographic is different for old used AMGs.
Enjoyable read. You got the air of unexpected excess over well.
I hate to mention your brother reviews at EVO but the year the original AMG GT won ECOTY was the perfect summary of AMG for me.. and made me want an AMG GT like no other Mercedes (except perhaps the W124 500E after watching TAXI). The AMG GT like the hottest Megan may feel the perfect road car for a 1 day test but like all of the breed loses more than it gains as an ownership experience by going that extra tenth and stripping out the interior for a cage.
A great car (to me) must be able to 'GT' as much as it can blow your socks off.

While it could be made clearer in the headline, the article has been written by Cackett (NC), AND (I assume) Matt Bird (MB). The point is Cackett is suggesting the A45 best personifies the AMG brand, while MB thinks the GT-R..... I know we all want answers, but as is often the case people have different opinions. I'd say the article does rather a good job of expressing the differences. Cackett can at times be a bit verbose, but I'd say his more recent articles have been 'de-tuned' a bit. Yes he has a slightly forced habit of using the manufacturing sites to reference a car, rather than the manufacturer name (recognising that it is occasionally warranted), but I chuckle at the Gaydon count in his other articles.
Wow, so many comments on this site just bh about the writing in the articles.
What a bunch of armchair generals. I don’t see any of whiners writing anything worth reading.
If you don’t like it why don’t you just bugger off, and if you fail to understand the writing due to the use of complex language I suggest you get an education.

Yes, we clearly need people on the forums who input as much as you do. What a bunch of armchair generals. I don’t see any of whiners writing anything worth reading.

the only thing i don't like between the article and the cars in question is the design of the "r" badge on the gtr. one of the most impressive things i have seen on the road by any car was the corner speed carried on a downhill left hander on the a702 by a black a45 last summer on the run home from dumfries and galloway.
he was followed by an obvious mate trying to keep up (and failing miserably by the look of it) in a black bmw coupe, i didn't see which model due to the size of grin on my face prompted not just by the ludicrous speed the a45 had on the corner (i was heading toward it at the time) but the composure it held while doing so.
there might be other cars just as capable in the same segments as these, but there certainly isn't much for me to dislike about either and rather a lot to like.

No AMG GT has won ECOTY - the AMG GT S came 9th in 2015. The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG came 5th in 2010. That particular car was also under-rated IMO and able to do the GT jobs you refer to.I hate to mention your brother reviews at EVO but the year the original AMG GT won ECOTY was the perfect summary of AMG for me.. and made me want an AMG GT like no other Mercedes (except perhaps the W124 500E after watching TAXI). I enjoyed this article. For me the AMG-GTR was the star of this months EVO test. Nick's wrong too. It lapped faster than the Ford GT (not within touching distance) and was only beaten by the mighty 911 GT2RS. Taking power to weight ratios and price into account, I thought a 1.5 secs deficit on a 1.5 mile lap wasn't bad going at all.
The little A45 really is a piece of kit too. Just the right dimensions for UK roads and I remember the EVO 4 x 4 test where one left a Nissan GT-R behind in the wet. I see early ones are down to around £20K now and there cant be many faster 5 year old cars available for that money.

I reckon that the A45 has to be one of the quickest point to point cars on sale today, particularly on winding British A and B roads, they're absolutely mental, a real point and squirt motor.he was followed by an obvious mate trying to keep up (and failing miserably by the look of it) in a black bmw coupe, i didn't see which model due to the size of grin on my face prompted not just by the ludicrous speed the a45 had on the corner (i was heading toward it at the time) but the composure it held while doing so.

I have two A45s
The non facelift and the face lift version and I am very happy with I went for non-aero so it does not stand out except the noise
Replaced stock tyres with Michelins and the grip is amazing now in all weather conditions
I got the LSD as well as an a extra and it helps
As many have said it is a great package and i have never been bored and it surprises a few people
I like it can be docile when needed but amazing fun when required
I am not sure what i will be replacing it maybe the new A45s when it comes out

Scrolled through looking for the video link to all the growly noises...
>disappointed<
Not sure whether it's chicken or egg - is there no video because Haymarket won't fund a proper car site, or is Haymarket losing money on PH because no-one understands what makes a proper, contemporary car site?
Either way, the kind of shoot-out video that would get shared to death by the internetz has been subjugated by the kind of article no-one can be bothered to read.

I’d read lots of reviews about the A45 so i thought it would be a worthwhile purchase. I was wrong.
Most frustrating overrated and disappointing car I’ve ever owned. It started niggling me after a month or two and by the end of my 8 months miserable ownership I detested it. It became the anti-performance car: I’d try and find any excuse NOT to drive it. Took an absolute bath on selling it.
If it’s so good why are the biggest items that A45 owners must after and ECU tune/tuning box and a pedal box?
