It's now 10pm, the train has stopped at Stafford station due to a signalling fault (the signalling office has been evacuated due to an electrical fire)...

I need to get home to Essex tonight... Last train leaves London Liv St at 00:50am so even if we get going now it'll be getting tight.

So, messaged a few Gumtree ads and eBay ads but must sound like a psycho asking if I can but someone's shed at 10pm in the p**s**g rain for cash at Stafford train station...

What are my next steps? Is anyone close with a shed to sell????

So you’re stranded in Stafford at 10pm and want to buy a car. You’re bonkers hehe there must be a stter nearby that a private seller is willing to let go. Or maybe get a room for the night?

About the nicest car on AT for under £2k in Stafford. You’re out of luck unfortunately

I suspect the taxi firms are slightly overbooked...

How desperately do you NEED to get home tonight?
One-way car hire?

Seems like there are a wealth of pubs within walking distance. Go pub, order cab/taxi. drink while you wait.

st situation, is there not a car rental company around Stafford, there must be something in Brum, I'd have thought a taxi would be wiser than buying a second hand car in 2 hours... Tried Uber?

I'd blame Theresa May and the fk wits who voted leave if I were in you situation, buy a bottle of vodka and sleep on a park bench.

Stay with the train for now.

If you get back to Euston too late to pick up the tube/train to Liverpool st and onto Essex then find a member of Virgin train staff (I'm guessing you're on the virgin train due at 23.43?) and explain your problem. They should make arrangements to get you home.

If not, book a Travelodge and again, you should be able to claim it back. (Keep receipts!)

Happened to my son a few times and he's been paid back each time no problem (although not with Virgin)

Good luck!

How are you getting on? I’m in Romford, where do you need to get to? Although I’m guessing if you’re able to get to here you’ll be on the last Colchester bound train.

Only just seen this, am in Derby, drive, can't sleep. But have work at just before 10 in the morning (driving job) so would love to help, would've offered, but unfortunately I can't.

Not really sure if I've just made you feel a whole lot worse or not, hope you get back all good though.

Thanks so much for all the offers! Amazing!

Ended up getting a call from an ebay home car dealer type and purchased, to my ultimate woe, the crappest mini one ever, and no sodding stereo... But despite being crap, cheap and with suspect suspension it has got me home.

Getting home was a 100% absolutely must, as it's my son's first full day at school so something I want to be around for!

Now, what to do with the mini... I genuinely think a) I've been had and b) it's only good for scrap! So it was a bit like the worst episode of top gear road challenge ever ;-) I'll send the receipt to virgin and see what they say...

Thanks again, all very awesome of you all!
