Sounds like a promising steer. The looks aren't really doing it for me (the front end in particular) but I may be tempted. If it's genuinely a great drive, I may have to give it a try.

Hmm, I am a big fan of the original in un fannied with form, maybe being a Gran Turismo enthusiast for some years had a part to play but also, when left alone or done right they are drop dead stunning, from any angle, well the last Supra was, didnt mind the MK and MK1 but it is all about the MK3 really.

Nice to see the name revived and I dont think things have to stay the same because thats how it used to be, but this seems smaller, more, dare I say it Celica sized ?

It has 340 bhp, which seems a bit low these days, funny how the Mk3 with 320 sound like all the power in the world, this will be markedly quicker so it wont be slow, its just there isnt clear air between it and anything else comparable, you need 500 bhp to raise an eyebrow nowadays.

Will reserve judgement on the styling until its revealed but I do have a feeling of mild disappointment in that its a reworked BMW and not a single minded Toyota development like in the nineties, I am not into nostalgia that much but will make an exception for the Supra.

Still, bet it will be a pretty fantastic proposition, and 50k, though its a lot of money, in context of what else it out there it isnt, probably maginally cheaper based on current prices than the Mk3 was in 1992.

Those wheels are a good submission to the Worst OEM Wheels thread.

BMW Z4 badged as a Toyota Supra, just Like AMG Mercedes now being badged as Aston Martin!
Is a shame that some "premium" brands cannot manufacture their own product more..

given the massive cost of developing a new car, especially one likely to sell in lesser volume, we're fortunate to have two OEMs who've collaborated on this one

it does seem, however, that one of these two OEMs is more the origin than the other; I'm probably being a bit unfair (and certainly uninformed!)

I did notice that the kerb weight (1500kg) is not too lardy; substantial, yes, but not overweight by contemporary standards

I am iffy on the looks of the front end but lets see how it looks come production. But I think this car will sell well. How long until they have one GT3 racing do we reckon?
Are they planning on going GT3 with it? It's almost certain to end up in SuperGT anyway, but it'd be good to see it on some tracks outside the far east. Castrol livery, please Toyota...

Not sure that's evidence that it will be raced in GT3. That article is the only place I've seen GT3 mentioned, and assuming Google's translation is correct, the article describes it as a "fictitious GT3". A concept car created for Gran Turismo is no indication that there will be a real GT3 based on it. I'm not saying it won't happen - just that there is no evidence that it will, especially when you consider that most GT3s are based on cars from the class above.

It feels a bit like this is the car the GT86 “could” have been?
In exactly the same way that a Focus RS is the car that a base spec Fiesta could have been. whistle

Anyone else seeing a resemblance to the original dodge viper coupe? particularly in the first photo.
Roofline, window shape and rear arch are very close

I hope it's only the camo making this thing look so hideous, overhangs look worse on this than the Z4 to my eyes as well.

I’m definitely glad this shares a lot with the BMW in terms of the infotainment/i drive!

My mother has a 2017 RAV4 and my god, the infotainment is a joke, looks like it’s been designed by a 12 year old in 2006 using PowerPoint. Laggy touchscreen with so many menus, colours and small logos, very distracting if you’re using while driving.

As for the engine, it’s like another poster said, BMW has a ready made environmentally friendly straight 6 to use, why go out of their way and spend millions to develop their own.

I think this can be a very appealing car and I may be tempted to buy it in the near future when it’s been out for a few years.

Now, imagine if Nissan and Mercedes AMG decide to make the R36 with Merc switchgear and the 4.0 TT V8 with everything else sorted by Nissan : O

well I've actually gone against my point here, presumed the latest base 911's were much much powerful! nevermind
The '91 280PS model was Japan only, with the rest of the world only getting 232bhp from that generation of Supra.

You're probably right, there'll be one with a syvecs ecu and a 1000hp 2J in once almost immediately in Dubai or some such.

Really? World beaters at the mundane with the odd flash of brilliance perhaps?

I stopped reading when I saw that bit that said "8 speed auto box".

However, there is comfort in knowing that you can buy the just as powerful, probably lighter, manual box OG model of the 90s for about half the price.

What a tremendous disappointment. This doesn't deserve to wear the Supra moniker and I hope it doesn't. Call it a Celica if anything as that is more in keeping with this effort.

As a previous owner of 2 JZA80's, I have been waiting for this for years, initial design of the FT1 looked good although it always looked a little on the small side. This looks pants in size, in looks, in appeal, hardly a halo model, more of a limp wristed upscaled GT86 for unadventurous moderates as opposed to an emotive beast for red blooded petrol heads.

The bean counters at Toyota have triumphed over the engineers. I was hoping the Supra would be standing proud among its other great compatriots like the Nissan GTR and Honda NSX. Instead it's a lame duck effort in keeping with the rest of Toyota's predominantly uninspiring white goods range. I thought things would be different under Toyoda who seemed to have a genuine passion for reigniting Toyota's flame which burned so brightly in the 90's. The LFA would have made the perfect base for a worthy Supra successor. Now that is a true reflection of what an inspired Toyota is capable of.

Disappointed, very.

To be a proper Supra it needs to be on a par with the base 911, which its not. IMHO. It needs to be special. The last TT was special because of the 2JZ. I don't see anything special about this.
yes to be a proper Supra replacement it'd have to be based on the new 8 series (if it absolutely has to be based on a BMW). Otherwise it's going to end up in a similar discount basket near the exit as the new NSX (bit of exaggeration of course, it's more like a Celica than a Supra).

???? Premium brands not manufacture their own product?

Neither of these two car manufacturers are likely to manufacture it! The bloody thing irrespective of BMW (100% certain!) or Toyota (more than likely) is being put together in Austria by Magna!

In fairness like some other posters this more BMW than Toyota!

A tide of negativity has rolled in, seems to be down to a simple summing up as follows

"Toyota have released another BMW Z4 and this means they are no longer different and also the engine will not be as unique as the last one which was just as Godzilla as anything in a Nissan."

As a summary I cannot fault that point of view. The new Yaris GRMN is also far more Toyota which means individual. This car seems to be following the crowd more which is sad.

However, can I put some thoughts across why that sadness is misplaced?

1. This car has a proper roof and is not a convertible like the Z4. Not only has it a roof, it seems to be bubble.

That in itself is cool.

2. The convertible Supra, aka BMW Z4 is handy around a well known racetrack it seems. The Supra will be even quicker.

3. Not many stats so far but the rear tyres are 275. Which means the wheel arches are kind for people fitting extremely light and wide magnesium wheels from Japan etc. Hopefully this is a tuning friendly car, as is the Toyota tradition, and not just on the engine.

4 Main complaints on the GT86 was poor interior, not enough horsepower and wheezy four pot. Toyota now solved both that but you will have to pay more.

Let's just see. Could be a nice compliment to the Alpine A110, both nibbling at Ph's affections. Let's hope

Too early to write it off yet as a BMW clone.
