Some people will just see this as an M140i in a posh (and heavy) frock, and I can see why.

However, they appear to have taken the best bits, B58, ZF box, and sorted out the less good bits, handling, looks, which is good.

Shame about the price, you can have the same engine and box etc for less than £30k in a M140i with the discounts available.

I think it's more to do with it being more Celica than Supra, and Toyota persisting on cashing in on the Supra name.

What a tremendous disappointment. This doesn't deserve to wear the Supra moniker and I hope it doesn't. Call it a Celica if anything as that is more in keeping with this effort.

As a previous owner of 2 JZA80's, I have been waiting for this for years, initial design of the FT1 looked good although it always looked a little on the small side. This looks pants in size, in looks, in appeal, hardly a halo model, more of a limp wristed upscaled GT86 for unadventurous moderates as opposed to an emotive beast for red blooded petrol heads.

The bean counters at Toyota have triumphed over the engineers. I was hoping the Supra would be standing proud among its other great compatriots like the Nissan GTR and Honda NSX. Instead it's a lame duck effort in keeping with the rest of Toyota's predominantly uninspiring white goods range. I thought things would be different under Toyoda who seemed to have a genuine passion for reigniting Toyota's flame which burned so brightly in the 90's. The LFA would have made the perfect base for a worthy Supra successor. Now that is a true reflection of what an inspired Toyota is capable of.

Disappointed, very.
Yep that sort of sums it up.

Regarding the 'upscaled GT86' comment - have you seen the size comparison between the A90 and the GT86? The A90 looks tiny.
Its more of an upscaled MX-5 ! smile

Size wise it's more Celica whereas Supra was a proper GT car, more 8 series like than a Z4. It's a GT86 on steroids.

Fair point Sam. But do Toyota ever cash in on a name? Porsche tend to .. Porsche R or T?

In the good old days of the last Supra the handling of it is overlooked due to that stellar engine. The head of GT86 development is leading this effort so handling is more to the front. He's got a good cv.

Strangely the GT86 was itself a dual effort with Subaru, and although the cars were nearly the same and looked identical Toyota now gets more of bashing now with BMW then than they did then. Go figure.

Let's see before writing it off.

The Mk 4 Supra was (imo) rather fat and bloated looking.

I think this new model is looking rather good, especially if it comes with a manual gearbox.

Perhaps the price will be too close to the M2 Competition though.

I’m not anti bmw at all but it seems a shame that Toyota chose not to do this fully in house.
Better than it not getting done at all I guess. Just isn't the money in developing stand-alone sports car platforms and that's why there are so few around.

So after years of complaining that cars are getting bigger/heavier...the complaint is that this car isn't big enough....?

350 HP, 1500+ Kilos

A brand new Supra that cannot get way from a modern Honda Civic Type R or VW Golf R - this is concerning and a little bit of my inner JDM has died when I learned of the above stat.

Toyota designed this car for 2003 to combat the naff 350Z, which explains its disappointing specs as they appear similar.

In a way, I do feel sorry for this car, with so much cult and growing white-collar petrol head reputation that it is going to be toothless in today's climate.

But the reality of it is that with the mad power being put out by uber hot hatches, especially AWD ones, even £100k supercars have to work hard.

And a £100k Toyata Supra just won't sell.

It will get away from both.

A BMW240i with the same engine as the Supra comfortably pulled away from my remapped Golf R from a rolling start boxedin

Besides, could the old Supra get away from say a top of the range Impreza/Evo back in the day?

I'm excited to see it properly unveiled smile

I think that now the Lexus brand has built some form for high performance cars rather than just barges, the car you want them to build would be Lexus badged for the same reasons VAG don't put a VW badge on the R8.

Suspect the M240i may have been mapped as well if it comfortably pulled away from a 370 ish bhp Golf R ?

They are fast but they dont have that kind of margin over a tweaked Golf R, you can get them over 400 bhp with just a tuning box or remap, been in a 440 bhp one, it was mental.

I think it looks good so far. The car industry has moved on and so if it takes BMW being involved to make it a reality, then it's better that, than them not making one at all.

With an ECU tune it should be making reasonable power and all things point towards the handling being on point.

My local dealer has my deposit to put me at the front of the queue anyway, but I can see myself getting this for sure.
