I would struggle to pay much over 30 for any Golf, even if it was new, just dont see them as being in that price range however many options.

Keep it for a year then try selling it, reckon you would be in for a 15 grand surprise.

A N55 (more reliable) engined 335i can be found for £9-11k, in Coupe form with the DCT or in the facelifted Saloon. We bought our Audi A6 3.0T at around £10k. Both have 5 seats, good boot space and handle well. Our Audi is very well equipped, the only missing technology from it is some automation. Only problem has been the thermostat on the Audi. It really isn't that difficult to find a 300hp car for £10k.

I am also going to say that the Golf R itself is a suitable car, I would be looking at a 4 year old example, and not a new model, as the 7.5 really has some minor differences. Same goes for the M135i/M140i, there are very decent models at £15k. If they reach £10k they will be on the list after the Audi, but we are still enjoying that right now driving
Please don't compare new cars to old cars. If you are going to compare cars either compare new cars or old cars
Fair enough, but the last post was looking at early 2000's performance cars for 10K.

Comparing new cars, I would rather have a well specced 340i, with the MPPK. I definitely would be able to get a pre-reg, or a nearly new, for around £45k.
You can compare whatever you like.

I’d rather have a 996 Turbo than a new Golf R.

Just because a fancy garage is trying to sell a used very well specced golf r for 45k, it doesn't mean its worth it.

You can get pre reg ones with options for less than 30k.

I think with cars like this, someone specced it up when it was new to their taste and paid handsomely for the privilege, as is their prerogative.

Second hand, which it is when it has 3000 odd miles on, its a used car, it doesn't retain that value, it isnt the original buyers ideal Golf R, its just another used one looking for a home with all the others, the options make it more attractive and do add some value but used car buyers tend to be less spendy. Plus it is now quite an old model.

Someone may also want that exact spec but expecting to get the money back that it cost when you have taken its virginity so to speak is probably a bit optimistic, that car is "over capitalized", too much stuff that doesnt really make it that much different to all the others out there, well a bit, bit not 15 grands worth and wouldn't fancy taking it for warranty work at VW with their infamous checks for any fiddling whether you can take the Stage 2 stuff off or not.

And three grand for an exhaust for a Golf, to me that would be three grand towards something that isnt a Golf, nothing wrong with them but it would be natures way of saying I need to step up a division beyond a 4 cylinder hatchback.

A lobotomy or, you know, regularly useable back seats for children and adults....a boot...to not turn up at a customer meeting looking like someone rich enough to own a Porsche.....

I know, in many, many circumstances the Porsche is a better car than the Golf. Except when it's not, then it's useless.

No they'd just have differing needs and wants, not everyone would want a leggy 8 year old colour coded white 911 with the wrong seats and those horrible turbo wheels with a push button PDK wheel and 1990 Lexus rear lights, some would, some wouldn't. It's not my idea of a dream spec 997 but I'm sure it's someone's just like the golf will be.

Indeed. Who pays ‘list’ anyway?
The maximum I would pay for any Golf would be £25k new.

£1600 for an air box on a golf? Is it made of gold? Why would anyone pay that!

i presume people dont want to dril holes in the factory airbox anymore.......for 1600 I would like to know whats so special about it and the difference between that and a grabbing a 5mm drill bit from the shed.. 1600 is a decent holiday or a lot of super unleaded.

That's the beauty about life, we all get choices and we can match the choices to our needs (practical Golf for everyday runs and children, or a leggy pork for perceived image/status). For example, I could not for the life of me understand why anyone would choose to live in a place/road like this...

...but you have. The beauty of choices...

The racingline airbox is around £600, but equally it has probably had various other parts if its a true stage 2 car.

Even as a Golf R owner, that price is absolutely insane....

How is an 8 year old Porsche comparable to an 18reg Golf?

its more of a driver oriented sports car that a Golf will ever be however, and at £40k there are many better cars to choose from.

It is comparable in cost, therefore is an option for someone with this specific amount of money available?

might be a similar price but I’d imagine you could also buy a bus, a wagon or a tractor for £40k too. Sometimes people want new, warranty, 5 seats, 30mpg and service costs that won’t make you cry.

Not comparable in maintenance costs though is it?
