I’m thinking about buying an M4.

Car would be kept in secure car park during the day and in a locked garage (integral) at night. Non City location in West Country.

My question is, how likely is it that someone would attempt to break into the garage in order to pilfer the vehicle?

Many thanks.

Who knows? Suppose it depends on whether the thieving scrotes would know it's there.

I'm out in the sticks myself and keep my M4 in the garage too. I haven't given much thought to whether it might get stolen from there. I don't think they're more nickable than many other cars, to be honest, and I'd probably be more worried about a Golf R or something like that.

Get some GAP insurance and don't worry too much, would be my advice.

Bit of an impossible question that. How long's a piece of string?
So many variables

According to my calculations, the probability that someone will try and break into the garage to steal it is....

14.67%

Caveat - I used absolutely no relevant data to reach this figure, other than my trusty finger in the air as every other poster on here will do.

HTH.

This is probably the most sensible answer to this question. It’s a great car - enjoy it, and don’t lose any sleep worrying about the ‘what if’s’

It’s just an m4 being kept in the West Country. So I’d say 0.453%.

East London, 47.457%

I’d say slim! Unless it’s a ordered car!

For crime they want something with 4 doors to easily get in or out of so an m3 would be a bigger target!

If you have room in the garage stick it in

As you're rural, and it's a secured garage, I'd say the chances are very low; As long as it is well insured, you'll be fine.

Is there an epidemic of M4 thefts down South now? Hopefully it will spread up north. I'll get one and leave it at the gate to keep my diesel, farm machinery and Land Rovers safe that I need to put food on the table

Im in the sw, bath.. I'm not overly concerned and doesn't have the same sort of rep that Birmingham or London has for break in type. Car thefts. Id garage it if you're worried and keep keys somewhere out of view. I was always a bit paranoid about people following me back home but have settled a bit about this. I can't Say 100% but it's generally pretty good down these parts..

If your M4 is a second car ie not used daily, I would recommend that you cover it with a decent fitted car cover so that the casual opportunist tea-leaf can't see exactly what is in the garage in the dark (if indeed they can catch a glimpse through any window), and up the garage locks as far as is reasonable.

If your car is targeted and stolen to order, there isn't much you can do about it - that type of thief will override security systems, locks and anything else to get at the car.

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate that it’s all crystal ball, but do appreciate everybody’s views.

Unfortunately back in 2002 we were awoken at 3am by car thieves. They’d entered the house and were trying to locate the keys to my then car, a VW Golf VR6. This car wasn’t garaged. We did however live in a very nice area.

I currently own a performance Lexus. I would guess this car isn’t a high risk theft wise, but with my experience with the VW, I thought I’d check what people thought about the M4

Indeed. Lock up the quad bike (an oxymoron, if ever there was) as well.

If you have the space, invest in collapseable bollard

I used this when I had a BMW M6 on the driveway. It's a pretty robust unit and quite a deterrent too.

More of a paradox really... Not demeaning to the OP in any way. Guess we're all in the same boat with different waves

Had an F80 M3 on the drive every day/ night for 3 years and no one nicked it.
Even left it for 2 weeks when on holiday and no one nicked it.

I really shouldn’t worry about it OP.

Perhaps for your own peace of mind keep it in the garage as much as possible.

Disklok or Autowatch Ghost would provide another layer of security.

That’s all very well until the scrotes wake you up demanding the engine.
Far safer to place it on the little corner table in the hall each night, for them to find without threatening you.
