RE: Manual Supra could be on the way
Discussion
Back in the 90s I did a few track days with Club 89 thanks to a mate of mine, and had a passenger ride in a MK4 Supra Turbo around a wet Brands Hatch. What a fantastic car!
Finally had the chance to buy something impractical in 2014 when I got a lump sum from taking a pension early, but by then Supra prices were out of reach sadly.
So I test drove a GT86, which I liked but there weren't many used ones around and for the price of a new one I could have got a nice Supra! But I really couldn't justify spending that sort of money on a weekend toy.
I ended up buying a BMW Z4 Coupe as I've never had a Roadster and don't want to!
So maybe this generation of Supra is what I need to aim for - it's pretty much a G29 Z4 Coupe after all, and if Toyota make a manual one that would be just right for me.
Pretty please Toyota.

It was a cruiser for retirees!! It wasn't a sports car! It wasn't highly regarded when new! It was one of many heavy, comfortable Japanese coupes on sale in the 90s. The fast and the furious films are the sole reason for its status.
"Hector is going to be running 3 Honda Civics with spoon engines. And on top of that, he just went into Harry's, and he ordered 3 T66 turbos, with NOS. And a Motec exhaust."About bloody time. This automatic lunacy must be coming to an end now with real world emissions tests looming and the tax benefits falling sway.
I had to make a choice I should never have needed to make between the 4 cylinder S3 manual and 5 cylinder RS3 auto. The 5 cylinder is the right engine but a well positioned pedal box, the ability to dip the clutch in a tight turn and a real handbrake for bad weather days gave the S3 just enough attitude and interaction to make it the better car than the RS3 as a daily commuter.
What will I replace it with if nothing over 250hp/ton is manual and I need reliability to do real miles

Has there EVER been a more drawn out and less interesting pre-launch campaign for a car than this? I mean, how many people have been waiting for a new Supra? It's not like the last one was a roaring sales success or even that highly regarded except for a few drainpipe exhaust toting "enthusiasts". It's certainly achieved a phenomenal amount of coverage but really, who actually cares?
very funny.Wait.....you're serious?.....
Thinking about this I remembered an old Top Gear mag test of a Supra vs. Cerbera vs. M3 on the Isle of Man, and with a quick bit of googling... I found a very old Pistonheads thread with the full article!! (scroll down after clicking the link)

Interesting that BMW's N54 has long been touted as the modern 2JZ and the new Supra is going to have a BMW 6.
B58 will take that crown. The N54 has too many issues at high power, that's why I lot of people have left the platform and haven't even got into the sub 10 second range. Then they buy another platform, like Audi, and pull 9 seconds out of the box. It isn't as strong as the 2JZ once you get into the 700+ territory. It's still great.... but it's not a 2JZ as it will never be a huge block of iron Its also some what Ironic that BMW are doing the engine. When the Mk4 supra launched the head of the M sport department was quoted saying that BMW would have serious competition and up their game if the 2JZ delivered what was promised.
Another interesting point, the 2JZ wasn't the "supra engine" rather it was from the Toyota braded GS300 "Aristo" hence why Lexus dealerships were in charge of servicing.

Disappointed that the final product doesn't look to be much like the FT-1. I really liked the FT-1, it looked aggressive and edgy; this looks softer edged and some of the nice elements like the integrated exhausts look to have been ditched as well.
Subaru have consistently done the same thing with the new Imprezas, particularly since the hatchback was released. They have presented some really great looking concepts and then built something completely different that looks really quite dull in comparison (IMHO).
I know I don't comment on here much so please don't think I am 'trolling'...

Is this a 2+2? The original FT-1 concept was.
The FT-01 concept looked much more closer aligned to what the MkIV Supra was. Instead though, Toyota have seemingly decided that the MkIV wasn't a success (even though they keep calling the Supra a 'legend'), because they've felt the need to re-invent it not as the GT car it used to be, but as something they are calling a "pure sports car".
Which has lead to the bulky hideous looking thing in the photos above.
But as already mentioned, its said to be just a 2 seater.
Quick throwback to Tiff Needell's somewhat homoerotic Top Gear segment about the Supra back in the early 90s.

Do we know if the new Supra is a 2+2 like the original or just a two seater? If it's 2+2 and they sell it with a manual 'box, the M4 could be replaced with one......
Just read the posts. 2 seats only :-( Might still have one IF they do a manual. Kids will have to be ferried around in other cars :-)
