Noise like wheel bearing, gets worse turning right but less turning left. Left wheel bearing at fault?

That theory is true most of the time.

Pain in the arse really!

Hate it. Just done some on a mates, was his rear tyres in the end causing the noise

Not necessarily. Is it a dual-race bearing? Could be the inner on one side or the outer on the other, as the loads shift about.

Is it a driven wheel? If so, jack the corner you suspect up and stick it in gear - you'll hear it... If it's not, then jack it and spin by hand - you might feel or hear something.

Jack the suspected side off the ground.
Grip wheel at 12 & 6 o'clock, rock the wheel & see if any play. If there is some play get someone to press the brake pedal, if the play disappears it's the wheel bearing if it doesn't it's a suspension issue.
If the bearing is a ball bearing I would expect NO perceptible play. Had this twice on our Pugs. Barely perceptible play - & I do mean barely perceptible. Replacing bearing cured problem.
If a taper roller I always prefer a tiny bit of play as overtightening will kill the bearing in quick time. Been there, had the full lift recovery to prove it! If play excessive you can either adjust & see if it's cured the problem or just replace the bearing.

What's failing? If it's a CV, it'll be a knocking on full lock, probably either way. If it's a triax, it'll be more of a shudder on acceleration.

not sure it is a duel race, it is a pug 407, definitely sounds bad on right turning over left.

Front?

Could well be. It's definitely a double race on the smaller/older ZX/306 platform, because I had one need doing a couple of months ago, and it was definitely louder turning one way than the other.

Jack that wheel up, and let the clutch out in 3rd or 4th. Trolley jack is fine, if it's solidly located. You WILL hear it...

The very fact that the noise reduces and increases with load means it's far from certain you'll hear anything with no load on the bearing.
