A company of funeral directors is offering a new service. Daily Telegraph Business section today https://tinyurl.com/yd244wpr It may be behind a pay wall.

Instead of the normal funeral service this company - Pure Cremation https://www.purecremation.co.uk/ will cremate the body and give you the ashes. There is normally no service, no funeral director, hearses, following cars, or any of that stuff.

You have the ashes to dispose of as you think fit and you can hold a memorial service at a time and place of your choosing. It's much cheaper, around £1,195 for the basic plan.

It seems a good idea, in principle, to me. I have no connection with the company.

Interesting idea but the funeral is part of the traditional mourning process and I’m not sure many families will be happy to miss that part, it’s the farewell for wider family and friends who won’t / can’t / shouldn’t be part of the scattering of ashes etc.

For small families etc. though it could be a great idea

This is not a new idea.

This company: https://www.fairpricefunerals.co.uk/costs have been offering this sort of service for several years.

Yes, there are a number of companies offering a similar type service. Although the Fair Price Funeral people seem to charge an extra £1,000!

bks to that, when all the useful bits have been donated, medical research can have what is left. I refuse to waste my money on putting me in the ground or burning me.

Make sure you register that then. Organ donation and body donation are not necessarily compatible with each other.

Go down the pub or Pizza Hut with the urn.

No way would I permit any more than the supreme minimum of my money to be spent disposing of myself. If everyone else don't like it they're free to cough up. I'll be skanking them from beyond the brave.

The difference can be spent on a holiday for everyone left behind.

I hate funerals. They're usually a drawn out affair when all one really (well, I do) want is for it all to be over just as soon as possible and to be able to grieve in private. No waiting for hearse and cars to turn up, ECT.

When my brother died earlier this year, his wish was that it was done as cheaply as possible. Not being able to plonk him into a wheely-bin and cart him off to the tip I did some searching on the web and found These people. It was a none religious service held at Golders Green cremetarium . Their Celebrant took the service, and I have to say it was one of the best services I have ever attended. Cost all in came to £1200 -00.

They quote £949.00.

Then why does it cost £1299.00 if it's in a Funeral Plan?

The £949.00 is for a non-attendance. I expect the £1299.00 is with attendance. It will also depend on the cemetery used as to price.

I chose Golders green as was closes, hence £1200.00.

Lol! I watched that recently and laughed about how bad that scene was. Scared the st out of me as a kid though.

Re the op it reads like an add. Nothing new.

Good to know. I have the organ card, so I will check the other.

Gas bills must be pretty hefty! haha

I like the idea of this I must admit, get the urn and then arrange your own wake. Could be a very personal way to see someone off.

Personally I'd like my ashes to go into a massive fire work that is then fired into the face of my enemies.laughlaugh

Doctors certificate, two men to trot out at 3am to pick it up, storage fees, arrangement time, other paperwork charges, profit etc. It all adds up.

Well, of course it doesn't. £515.00 in Hanworth, was it?

https://www.swmcrematorium.gov.uk/our-services/

If you can get the body to the crem, get one of your mates to do the service, that is all you need to pay.

It puts it all in perspective, doesn't it?

Parents spent most of the last 15 years travelling around in a house-bus, with parental consent, sister & I plan a viking funeral for them. I'll drive the bus down the beach, she'll start the fire. Parents happy, no thieving funeral costs by those who prey on people in times of loss. biggrin

What could possibly go wrong?
