RE: McLaren 600LT: Driven
Discussion
Fantastic car no doubt about it but 95% plus of buyers will be on a certain budget and I genuinely think more people buy this kind of car with half an eye on residuals than you think and it will push them towards other brands
I think Mclaren have done well, the factory tour is a nice touch and the cars are certainly quick but perhaps they’re churning out too much too soon without thinking too long term.
Always keep supply a little below demand.
It was when the dealer said they will churn out as many as they can in a year that put me off
Anyway, good luck to them, one of the best brands in the business but I’m a bit put off - don’t think they’ll mind though as I’m not exactly their best customer!
The Mclaren experience emails are good too when they invite you to go on a ‘holiday/driving tour’ with your car and them. Would be a lovely experience but the last one I thought about, that arctic circle one sounded good and I could be making this up but I recall it being £20k per person or £20k for 2 or something. The long first class holidays you could have with that is quite a chunk.
As I say I’m perhaps too cost conscious to be a customer of theirs but I’d query what kind of customer that has the funds to buy these cars just wants to throw so much money away

so the LT is the lightweight version of the 570s
lighter exhuast - 12.6kg
removal of a/c -12.6kg
lightweight wheels -17.kg
lighter seats -26.kg
thinner carpet - 5.6kg
total = -75.6kg
exhaust - £4k (https://quicksilverexhausts.store/collections/mclaren-570s/products/570s-ceramic-coated-system)
removal of aircon - £idk
wheels - ~£6k ?
lighter seats - £5k
thinner carpet - £100 or less
£15kish to get your 570s 75% there yourself, but having said that the £35k premium on a 570s isn't that bad
It would be cheaper for me to just go on a diet. lighter exhuast - 12.6kg

I may be wrong, I haven't read the article in depth, but aren't there other changes to the car aside from just the weight....ie body kit, engine and suspension? If so, that would take more work still.

You must be a really fat fker if you can lose near 100kgs and still function as a human being!

There are other changes and the new suspension, wheels, tyres, and brakes, oh and the extra 30bhp, all contribute to making it sharper.

yeah there's more, including lighter suspension components and other lighter bits and bobsI may be wrong, I haven't read the article in depth, but aren't there other changes to the car aside from just the weight....ie body kit, engine and suspension? If so, that would take more work still.
the power would be easy to add yourself though
was just highlighting a relatively cheap way of getting most of the weight savings

Great review Matt,of what’s clearly a fabulous car. I don’t post much but I wanted to give my view on a couple of posts themes that this story seems to have created. When will everyone wake up and accept you should buy a car you can afford knowing it will depreciate. The last 6-7 years are an anomaly driven by low interest rates and people buying ‘investments ‘ which are capital gains free. Once cheap money starts to become expensive (as it is now. Evoking) the secondhand car market will stall as a lot of these investors are now sellers not buyers. Ask any car dealer out there, unreliistic prices from sellers who don’t want to accept what their ‘investment’ is really worth now. In the long run this is good for petrol heads.
Mclaren residuals and servicing are not up to some other marquees standards ( yet) but if you look back in time you could see Ferrari’s from the 60’s were worth very little in 70 and early 80’s while more established marque like Bugatti Tyler 35 were still sought after.
I am lucky enough to own a 675LT and done 8900 miles in 2 years. It is the most amazing machine and very capable of doing the motorway miles as well the fun stuff. I have had no issues at all except my DAB Radio not working for awhile. I have no doubted benefited from it being the fully developed version of the original 12C/650. It’s had two services which were expensive. This is where mclaren need to encourage ( let?) some independents to set up so the equivalent of an Autofarm for can take care of older Mclarens This will build long term brand loyalty for lots of reasons The 12C is amazing performance car for the money, it might depreciate further but what else could you buy for 80-90K to give you that type of performance?
Finally yes if I had to sell my LT I would lose money but I’d rather lose money having enjoyed 8900 miles ( so far) then bought it ( or any other super car) and done no miles to ‘protect’ it’s value. We are only on the planet once, buy what you can afford and use it.
ps would recommend to spec mclarens with limited extras especially the ‘carbon fibre’ as that is where the depreciation comes in dispite what the salesperson might tell you
This is my 2nd time on this planet so will give Mac a try since I was Ferrari guy in my previous life.Mclaren residuals and servicing are not up to some other marquees standards ( yet) but if you look back in time you could see Ferrari’s from the 60’s were worth very little in 70 and early 80’s while more established marque like Bugatti Tyler 35 were still sought after.

They do look better in the flesh. Very stealthy looking and the front not as uglyas in pics but I don’t really like the design since it was changed from the 12c. The 12c despite it’s many flaws and plummeting depreciation value has a very conservative yet exciting body that I long missed from admiring sports cars from the late 80s and early 90s. I feel this is missing in the supercars industry since everyone is trying to establish a memorable trademark look ala Lambo.

Well its much prettier than any 911 - but still has hints of that same froggy smile but just without the flatfish eyes! I'd still have both!jonah35 said:
I know but I honestly prefer a ‘normal’ car away from all the internet bravado!
I’m surprised the nose lift hasn’t stopped working the amount of times you have to use it and on bumpy roads it’s just easier to go quicker in an m4 or something.
It seems a good idea on the internet but in real life it’s always the keys to the ‘daily’ that get picked - even for car events!
Went to salon prive and turned up in non salon prive type car, enjoyed looking at everyone else’s super car that they had to drive home whilst I just got drunk on champagne and got a taxi back to my hotel
Reality different to perception is how I’d put it. Great fun if you have rented spa for a day but real world? Hmmm
I get enzos, f40s, caterham r500, e30 m3 and so on because you can use them and they kind of hold their money so you can kind of justify it but a car just slumping in value for the little you use it is a little off putting - well it is for me at least but still the 600LT looks lovely and it will drive well on a track
Ultimately it will look good outside a pub in Cheshire but secretly the owner will want to have got a taxi so he can have a few beers or will want a Range Rover outside so he can open the door without hitting the kerb!!!
You sir, need a track day and skid plates, in no particular order.I’m surprised the nose lift hasn’t stopped working the amount of times you have to use it and on bumpy roads it’s just easier to go quicker in an m4 or something.
