Does anybody know if the new 1 series will be available with X drive? Specifically a fast one like the M140i.

New 1 series is going to be front wheel drive isn’t it?

Yeah front wheel drive and X drive for the hot version I presume.

If you want an idea of what the new hot 1 series will be like, read into the X2 M35i. Will be like a Golf R unfortunately

Unfortunately was my fist thought, but then with a RWD 2-series, turning the M1XX into a Golf R/A45 competitor makes sense, and adds to the portfolio rather than taking away

Yes it's more or less confirmed the new hot 1-series will be an M135i xDrive powered by a 2l engine. This will make it a direct rival for the A35, Golf R and S3.

Still to be confirmed whether the 2-series Coupe will live on in RWD form with a 6-cylinder engine.

I thought it had already been confirmed that the next 2 Series will sit on a shrunken 3 Series Platform rather than the 1 Series?

Although just to confuse things even more, the upcoming 2 Series GC is looking to be FWD, which is a shame, as a 2 Series with improved access to the rear would be perfect for my next car.

Mechanically, wouldn't that require two different implementations of x-drive: one for FWD and one for RWD? Currently, x-drive works with a longitudinal engine and gearbox, whereas FWD will presumably have a transverse layout?

M54 sounds best in the E46, in E39’s and even E60’s, the sound is almost non existent. I think it was downhill after the M54 in the E46 in terms of engine sound. The nicest sounding 6 since then is the engine in the M135i/40i’s
Engines*
Which one is it though.
135i has the N55 and 140i has the B58.

He's also wrong, as the N52 sounds better than either of them.

I quite liked the M52 sound but the best is by far the S54.

I much prefer the noise the M54 makes compared to the N52, I found the N52 too muted in the cabin/from the exhaust(in a 330i anyway). Whenever I've heard a E46 330i drive by me its always had a nice burble to it, the E90 330i is pretty much silent from the exhaust. frown

The S54 sounds like a wasp stuck inside a biscuit tin, its a horrible tinny noise for me!

It's far from silent in the 1 Series, that burble is always there, and if you are driving with the windows open you can hear some lovely pops and crackles on the overrun smile

I've owned an E36 328i and the current 125i, and driven lots of the other 6 cylinder petrols - best in a tunnel is the 125i smile

cool I wished my E90 330i would've sounded like that for sure.

I put the M3 system on my E36 328i and it sounded incredible. Miles better than my 335i will ever sound

I love the sound of the B58, personally. It's creamy smooth and has enough of the traditional BMW straight six howl at high revs that you couldn't mistake it for any other manufacturer.

Yes, it's overly silenced on a standard exhaust, and yes there's some artificial augmentation nonsense inside the cabin, but the underlying engine sound is lovely from outside the car.

No, it's not an S54, but what is that's made today?

I meant to say engine’s, however they sound almost identical to me, I’ve driven both and there’s not much difference. Perhaps if I owned both for a year, I’d know.

Anyways the point is, the N55 and B58’s are the best sounding straight 6’s since the M54 in the E46 IMO.

Most N52’s I’ve heard are very muted in comparasion. I had 2 E46 330i’s, one had the butterfly valve thing in the exhaust stuck open and the other opened and closed depending on the rpm you’re at (I think it was that, or the speed maybe).

Both sounded better than any N52 I’ve heard, deep noise from the engine and a throaty noise from the exhaust. It’s a shame they’re not that quick now but a 330i/ci must have been a revelation in 2001 when they come out, unbelievable cars.

I’ve never heard an S54 at full pelt unfortunately however I’ve found that with M3’s, especially the E46, E92 and the F8x M’s, is that they sound really poor at half throttle. My neighbour had an E92 M3 for a few months, had some sort of cat mod on it and it sounded awful because it was so loud and he’d try make progress and noise by shifting through the gears but the car would be moving at the pace of a 320d while making a ridiculous racket. However it would be a different story between 5-8k rpm. That’s the reason I’d never buy an E46 M3 or E92, just can’t make the most out of the noise without doing ridiculous speeds. The M3/M4’s are different though because they’re turbo charged with lots of torque.

Always thought that with my old E90.... I was told it was because the E46 330i was the range topper, the E90 330i wasn't!
