The N52 was very exhaust dependent, the 3 and 5 were almost silent, the 1's not so much

Of course if you want to get really silly, BMW would quite happily sell you something a little bit fruitier, if much less sociable.

Good news is the new M340i will have the fruity exhaust as standard, with Comfort Mode to quieten down when needed (the 130i MPE had one volume - LOUD).
