Number plate on the dash is a yoof/scene thing. It's done to portray an image that the owner does not want to affect the performance of his very highly tuned car, by fitting a front number plate, which would reduce air flow through the radiator, cause overheating, and increase aerodynamic resistance. Often seen on old clapped out 'stanced' VWs. Looks absolutely W4ANK in my opinion.

my front plate is on the dash because I can't quite decide the best way to mount my plate after having the front end painted a few years ago. Terrible indecision but I am not following a fad or attempting to avoid identification
Several years to decide where to put it?? How about fitting it where it was intended to go - in the number plate recess on the front of the vehicle?

Number plates on the dash look untidy to me. I removed the number plate plinth on my New Beetle and had all the holes filled and the bumper repainted, so had the number plate on the dash on the way home from the bodyshop and even that annoyed me. I now have an undersized one (yep, shoot me) on the grille under the bumper. What really bugs me are the people who remove their front plate but don't fill the holes, or even worse leave the plinth behind.

What this thread is clearly showing is that everyone is a 'bell-end' to someone.
Not to mention that there are a dwindling number of car enthusiasts around here.

Why have you got an underside plate on the grille below the bumper? Can't you just fix a standard size plate to the bumper with adhesive pads?

In the late 70s my friend covered the interior of his Mk III Cortina in purple fur. It was quite the done thing at the time.
He's got a Ferrari now. I'm not sure where that leaves us but there you are. hehe

Because I wanted a smooth front bumper as it was mainly a show car.

Probably being mentioned but definitely true

Any M badge on a non M car
But how do you classify non M?

An M135i is not a true M car as such (M3, M5 etc) so should it have a badge?
For the love of God please don’t start this one
I own an m135i and it is not a full M car let me tell you that.
So should it be called a 135i and be devoid of all M badges?
You do realise all the hot chicks don't care, and only other male BMW drivers (young men or middled aged thinning hair types) are bothered, don't you....:-)

Your generalisations fail miserably; it's an S2000 and there isn't a recess, it was designed not to have a front number plate. I’m not exactly a yoof at 46 either 😉

In my 'Yoof' I would probably have failed every Pistonheads "Bellend" test.. Lowered, dodgy graphics, loud exhaust (admittedly it was a side exit), huge stereo.... The list goes on and on..

Part of growing up I say.. And part of getting old when we start complaining.. biggrin Though some exhausts I admit sound horrible and any headlights (even on new cars) that blind the winkies off me, irritate me.. Other than that, best of luck.. smile

Not a valid excuse to drive around indefinitely without a front number plate though. How did it get through UK type approval? How did the dealer supply the vehicle when it was new? A number plate surround may be? Why not fit the plate back on like that? I guess in the name of vanity you would rather stick two fingers up to the law and drive around with an invisible plate?

Sweeping indicators on Audis.

No idea whether they are standard or not, but anyone paying money for something that they will never see or experience while they are driving their car is a bellend. Double bellend points for people trying to retrofit them to old Audis.
hahahaha

I have no aversion to Audi, but every now and then they have done something that really "gets my goat". About 15 years ago they started with those spangly, sparkly, jewel like headlamps - that made me really angry tongue out I think these may be the norm now on modern cars - I live in a poor country so I never see new cars (that's a god-send, BTW) tongue out

Six month ago I was back in the UK for the first time in years - and I noticed that Audi were up to their old tricks again - this time with indicators that sweep, as you say. I was very glad at that point just to be a visitor to the industrialised world laugh

So yes, I agree. BELLEND!!! laugh

It wasn't an excuse as I don't need to excuse myself to you; I was just pointing out you were wrong in your previous post...unless you are an ejit you already know the answers to the approval\dealer\surround questions. The real mystery is why do you care; it has zero impact on you or anyone else for that matter...you don't post like Old Bill so why get your panties in a knot about things like this?

Don't trot out the trite response about me leaving the scene of an accident and being unidentifiable; both plates are visible and I'm not an ahole.

I've a heavily modified MR2 Turbo.

And a Volvo with a prancing moose sticker.

I'm a bellend irrespective of my cars.

Sounds like you are in good company laugh
Although having been involved in concours events a while ago, people with completely standard cars can be a bit odd too !

No panties in a twist here, just enjoying a Friday afternoon debate on what constitutes looking like a bellend. Plates shoved on the dash, instead of on the front of the car where they should be, meets the criteria, all in my own opinion of course wink I'm just interested in why you feel that you are above the law, and should be allowed to drive around without a front number plate, when the other 99.9% of vehicles on the road have to display one properly? (Don't give me the excuse that a plate shoved on the dash top is clearly visible, it isn't, and you know that)

As did the Renault 19.

I'm sure I read once that yellow light has better fog penetration, although I may well have imagined it/heard it from someone unreliable.
It's a myth, colour makes no difference in fog as the water droplets are much larger than any wavelength in the visible spectrum. Yellow film just reduces light output for no useful reason (unless yellow fog light man is the type of bellend to leave them switched on all the time, in which case it might make them a tiny bit less obnoxious).

Your emotive language suggests otherwise wink

I don't think I'm above the law...I won't be complaining if I get a FPN smile

It's a vanity plate with only five digits (what a tw't eh!) so clearly visible wink

Do you know what? I've decided that the rear number plate on my car ruins its aesthetic appeal. Sod it, I'm going to take it off and chuck it on the rear parcel shelf! wink
