RE: Shed of the Week: Suzuki Ignis Sport
Discussion
Yep, this a shed I'd definitely buy with my own money. Better than some tired old 4 x 4 or other barge that comes up more frequently.
These were quite rated in the day as I recall.
The elephant in the room would be the Swift Sport, as I believe its possible to pick one up now for the £1500 SOTY budget, although probably not a nice one for that money!!
Edit* Cheapest Sport on Autotrader is £1695 right now, although I am sure I saw one the other day for £1495. I always keep an eye out for the prices of affordable fun potential second car material!

I had several years of mockery from my wife and colleagues when I owned one, but I didn't care, such a fantastic little car.
According to the DVLA it's still going strong at over 170k miles, no surprise as they were fantastically over-engineered with some really decent running gear.
Only eye watering moment was the cost of spark plus when I got it serviced.

I wish people would stop saying the 1.5l engine is also found in the Yaris, it's not. Just because two companies make an engine of the same capacity, doesn't automatically mean they're the same engine!
Correct, give that man a cookie!Yaris uses the 1NZ-FE engine and the Ignis uses the M15A. Yaris got a smidge more torque and power.
It's strong money for the Suzuki. These were banged out at £7,995 new at the end of the production run. The £1500 asking price should secure a much more accomplished Yaris T-Sport. Nothing wrong with the Ignis, but it's far more agricultural.

Ignis Sports are very popular cars for autotesting.
The Ignis might be slightly quicker, slightly lighter and slightly more powerful than the Panda 100, but its a whole lot uglier.
Panda for me every time if I was in the market for a fun n/asp rollerskate (actually, I'd probably go with a Grande Punto T-Jet for the extra grunt, but the Panda has infinitely more kerb appeal)

We bought one of these for Mrs M when here Octavia 4x4 was thankfully destroyed in a minor bump(dreadful car). That was 5 years ago and we've only just replaced it with a 2014 swift sport (superb).
These are great, one of the best gearbox's you'll ever encounter, an engine that loves to have a big kick in the nuts, and decent reliability to boot. The recaro's are great, it is a bit postman pat's van in red, though this looks like a tidy example. The boot is pathetic, and the ride and interior a little crash bang wallop, which is to be expected from this era. You can certainly notice the difference between this and a more modern swift. That is strong money, but it's a tidy car. We had the Yaris t sport for a while and it's much more refined, same levels of reliability, and same issues with rust. We sold the Yaris over the Iggy as I figured it was the better car, which my father in law now pootles about in.
I'd buy another in a heartbeat if the need cropped up. I'm lucky I still have access to ours, great car.

Had one as a first car and was great fun. Didnt have one advisory on the MOT until I slid it into a kerb being a nob. Checked the MOT history and no advisories since! Was owned by a 85 year old women before me(apparently). It was yellow and everyone took the mick, until they realised it was cheaper to insure and much faster than anything they had at the time!
Replaced it with a glanza, minus the turbo it was half the car compared to the ignis

Anyone had one of these and a 172/182 clio? Im wondering how they compare as a cheap but fun daily hack?
Yes, 172 Cup, Ph1 172, Ignis Sport and Sportka.Gear change is miles ahead on the Ignis (and Ka) and it's also much better screwed together. The 172 is obviously quicker and it's more comfortable for a long run.
Was never a fan of the 172 in stop start traffic, particularly the Ph1 due to the clutch and gearbox.
If I could have any again it would be the Ignis.
I had a 172 Cup many years ago & an Ignis while between cars a couple of years back. The Clio is a step up in performance but both were pretty miserable on a commute. I'd go for the Ignis factoring in reliability.
Interior may appear cheap but they take all sort of abuse & simply wipe clean - actual as opposed to perceived build quality.
This was my one...

I've owned some older Japanese stuff and this is definitely true. It might be cheap-feeling plastic and hard, basic surfaces, but they stay in one piece and generally everything electric will continue to work for a long time.Interior may appear cheap but they take all sort of abuse & simply wipe clean - actual as opposed to perceived build quality.
I've had VWs with perceptibly better interiors that have actual fell apart over time.
Purely anecdotal in my example but it does seem a not-uncommon trend.
