It's all to do with driving style. My R estate is averaging over 35mpg long term (indicated). High 30s is normal on a run.
If you're going to drive a Golf-R with a sufficiently light right foot to get 35mpg out of it long term, one does somewhat wonder why you didn't just get the 1.0 TSI instead...
Yeah. Exactly what I was thinking. Why bother with an R if you're going to try and nurse 40 mpg out of it.
You’re only getting 40+ mpg on a motorway. You’re telling me you drive on the motorway in 4th gear because you recoil at the idea of not wasting your fuel?

Have a laugh, mate. Not everyone who buys a performance car wants to redline it 100% of the time.

True. 2wd Leon Cupra will easily do 40+ on a medium speed motorway commute. I average more than 35mpg in mine overall. Remarkable economy considering the available performance.....

Wife had the 190bhp petrol DSG FR trim of these as a courtesy car. I picked it up for her and groaned when I saw it. Low power diesel, thought I. "FR" on this is pointless, thought I.

I was wrong. I'm not a badge snob, I have a lease cupra 290, so I'm well versed in SEAT. But this thing was a joy to drive; and I HATE driving the wifes 150bhp tdi Tiguan. It's heavy, slow, awful gear ratios etc. But I'd quite happily take the exact Ateca she had as a courtesy car as my next car. Minimal body roll, yet not wafty. Good driving position, gearbox was a joy and the four wheel drive was great. As we all know with these 'SUVs" they're not massive on the inside, but it was enough.

I'd need to test-drive this to see if it was worth it over the FR trim we had, which I can't believe I'd even consider, as before this, I was in the somewhat PH mentality of "These are stupid?". Not quite, they're actually pretty fun.

According to spritmonitor, average mileage for the golf R is 28 mpg (10,0l/100km). Ok it's mainly from german owners but I found it to be quite accurate.
Seems about right. Mine is hovering around 26mpg at the moment. Mostly urban or spirited b road driving though.

This would be on my Santa's list if it came with a 7 seat option smile

Tarraco is 7 seat and is likely to get a Cupra version.

Looks like an appealing car at a decent price. But why oh why this stupid "Cupra" branding?

CUPRA is a separate brand now, eventually they are hoping to make their own cars not just rebadged SEAT's

I asked Jaime Puig in Barca a few weeks ago in what direction CUPRA was heading in terms of power (I actually asked whether they would finally get access to Audi engines such as 2.5T) and he said Cupra was aiming for fully electric.

The driver that delivered my Cupra 290 managed to average 40mpg over the 250 mile journey. I asked him how he did it and he said they are restricted to 60mph.

It's not been near 40mpg since. I only do about 50 miles a week and it's all short journeys in town. However I rarely put my foot down and my long term average is only 26mpg. On my occasional 30 mile commute in to the office via motorway it returns around 34mpg on a good day provided I don't floor it at any point.

I don't see the point in cars like the Ateca Cupra. I had an Ateca as a loaner when mine went in for a service and it is actually quite a bit more spacious than the Leon. However, there's no point in such a car being fast. The hatch sized vehicles on which it's based don't quite manage to be fully engaging so with more mass, size and higher COG this can surely only be worse in that regard.

SEATs and the regular Ateca aren't really on my radar but this certainly has appeal. As has already been mentioned, for a "boring" family man like myself with one or two young kids, something with the footprint of a Focus/Golf and with a comparable boot but better visibility, more rear cabin space, easier access and a more compliant ride has appeal. The problem is most of these affordable crossovers are a bit bland and dull, dull, dull.

Sure, a small estate has more boot space and slightly better dynamics but still shares the relatively cramped rear cabin of its regular hatch counterpart and what choices do you really have? Golf R (DSG only), Focus ST (no longer available) or Leon ST Cupra. Generally, if you want a roomier rear cabin you need to go for a bigger car or an MPV. I went through this 4 years ago, looking at most of the new small hatches available at the time and although we bought the one with the most roomy rear cabin (Toyota Auris), my 4 year old was still kicking me in the back!

We ended up trading it in for an MPV 2 years down the road for the extra cabin space and luggage space for pram/travel cot/high chair etc. but now we're out of that stage, so a Focus/Golf would have enough boot space but still too cramped in the rear for a 6 and 4 year old in car seats. I would love a Leon Cupra R but it was only a "limited" edition and the regular Cupra looks a little bland. This would be more practical though, similar price and AWD traction. No one this side of Audi/BMW/Mercedes/Porsche are doing a "hot" compact SUV and they would all be north of 40k, so I commend SEAT for offering something a bit different. Also remember that the old Forester XT/STI filled a similar niche and that's a very PH car!

Went to see an ateca and a tiguan yesterday with the intention of ordering the cupra model. I didn't.
OK in the front, but the golf was better, and I don't get why people think these things have more space in the back seats. More headroom, sure, but much more upright sitting position and the front seats seem closer. Felt like I was sitting in an airplane. Again, the golf was more comfortable.
Golf r Estate or the Leon equivalent now seems like a much better choice to me, having a rethink.

Your kids must be very tall for their age. My kids are 6 and 8 and have no problem with long or short journeys in the back of my 5dr Cupra. Nor did they have any issue with the Golf R I had before that.

I would describe the Ateca I had as a courtesy car as having a more practical boot space and what felt like a wider and more upright seating position. If you find the likes of the Leon/Golf to small in terms of leg room then you will find the Ateca no more accommodating in that regard.

They are pretty tall, although my wife and I are not particularly. At least they are out of rear-facing seats now. I had to pretty much amputate my legs to sit in the passenger seat of my Civic to sit in front of my son and avoid the seat touching the back of the car seat! I haven't checked out an Ateca yet of course but plenty of room in my MIL's RAV4 and you can fit another adult between the two car seats (in our Auris or Civic, you couldn't really). Unfortunately I only found this out when we went to pick up my brother-in-law who had kindly offered to run us to the airport (I had a very uncomfortable 3 hour journey to the airport wedged in between the car seats)! wink

I fully fell in love with it, DSG was great event had launch control biggrin
Really impressed by it.
