RE: Audi RS4 (B7): Spotted
Discussion
Ran a b7 RS4 Avant for about 18 months (black with light leather, no buckets). Not that quick unless you really worked it, absolutely drank fuel unless you were very careful and parts were extremely pricey. Oh and it really wasn’t that big inside for an estate.
I knew all of this before buying it and loved it / miss it nonetheless. Held its value well as I sold below 60k miles.
The sort of performance car we soon won’t be able to buy new and really got under your skin, precisely because it had so many flaws. But to me, it had character - even just trundling down my residential street.
They aren’t really a Q-car though are they?! A debaged A6 4.2 maybe. But not an RS4.
Just my two cents.

Good car, I did 108,000 miles in mine over 4 years back when they were new. Lost about 8 million pounds on it and it never came close to the 414bhp it was supposed to put out and never felt any quicker than my E46 M3's, for it wasn't. But it was a great road car, damping the best I have ever seen in an Audi and traction as you'd expect. Sounded great, but needed more than the 366-388bhp mine put out on the rollers.

Mine produced 367 on the rollers at MRC last year aged 10 years and 60k miles. A carbon clean and map got it up to 427. It’ll have lost a bit since then (coking up) but the throttle response is massively improved. Escort3500 said:

I had one a few years ago, but coming from turbo’d cars I found it very uneventful when driving. Also may be due to the fact that the build quality made it feel like you was doing 30mph, when actually you was going considerably quicker.
Never threw up massive bills, just a number of stupid smaller ones, like the detector for the tyre pressure sensor behind the bumper... £200.
My e92 m3 felt like that. Had to be doing many jelly beans an hour to get it to excite. And I do mean many... took me a good 4 months to adjust coming from turbo cars as well given a golf r or m135 would give it a run for its money. Was always a gear down when I first got it.Never threw up massive bills, just a number of stupid smaller ones, like the detector for the tyre pressure sensor behind the bumper... £200.
Friend of mine owned one of these from new for a number of years. Certainly wasn't cheap to run. 2x suspension overhauls (yes, it had 8 new shock absorbers fitted in the 6 years/120k miles he owned it), de-coke, windscreen wiper motor, steering pipes replaced, air con compressor and a host of other problems.
Was a nice car, mind.

I sniffed around these a while ago. I really like the small size and fairly restrained mean looks.
And if course the V8.
Was eventually scared off by reports of engine out for jobs you really shouldn’t have to.
Engine out for what? Not heard that before. You’re not thinking about the contemporary RS6 are you? And if course the V8.

I always wanted one of these until I met folks who owned them/drove them (still one of the best looking Audis ever made tho - esp in Avant form)
They're not as quick as I expected - you really do need to cane them if you want to make progress and whilst that's fun for a while, I get the feeling it doesn't really equate to low-maintenance and long-life for the car (the noise is fantastic tho)
None of the owners had any of the really big issues such as DRC suspension problems or manifolds but they knew what to look for (one of the cars was already on coilovers - but that just utterly fked the on-road ride) - expect your wallet to take a massive caning...

Had one of these for a couple of months - it was a lovely place to be and the noise and torque was very addictive, but the car left me feeling a bit cold.
Dynamically, the RS4 was way inferior to an E90/92 M3, which is about as close as competitor as is possible to have; it was a very long way from well balanced - always wanted to understeer, even at a 'normal' lick....
