I’ve driven the new model but now discontinued V8 Diesel and whilst it was not exciting it would be the perfect business car for the international business person based on Europe who has a 911 as the weekend car.

That's very red! Are you able to spec your wheels in the same colour of the car or did you get that done aftermarket? Would love a sky blue one with wheels the same colour!
All factory spec. All chrome parts done in black, debadged.
Colours work well, very good choice!

All bean counters here pointing out the power deficit of a 450bhp family car wonder what and most importantly how you drive your family car? IMO marketing guys have taken over decision making in large car industry in an endless trump card game and that only produces less interesting product.

That green one looks great, the red less so, not into those black wheels with the middle edge, makes the car look old somehow.

The bigger back end make the proportions work better I think.

THAT GREEN! Love it. Please make it available on the sporty models too Porsche.
I quite like the presence of a Panamera on the road, but would not be able to justify it over a powerful 5 series (as stated before).

It’s a lot of money compared to the M5/E63s but then again this is a Porsche that starts at 70 odd grand opposed to E220d’s being available to lease for 300 quid a month and 520d’s being 35 grand after a discount.

On paper it’s seems like they’re similar but I think, the natural competitiors will be the AMG GT53 and the upcoming M850i GC, both probably starting at the same price with similar performance
the problem with comparing it to anything from Merc and BMW now is image, i have yet to see or experience a Panamera driver piloting the car like a total tool. They are out there no doubt and i have seen a few with questionable styling choices but people will keep ignoring cheaper alternatives until the situation with those badges changes. The one car that does not suffer as much is the M5 but that’s on the past basis that they were company exec cars, with the recent price rises and tax changes i am not sure it can hold that buyer cache anymore.
Haha!

It's the same case as comparing an M5, E63 etc to a Quattroporte or a Rapide. Panameras, Quattroportes and Rapides are completely different product types that do the more relaxed sports saloon/GT role much better than the really barge like 7 series, S Class etc.

Sitting in M5s and E63s, it is impossible to get away from the more humble origins of basic rep mobiles. If it were all about power, no one would ever buy M cars, 911s, most AMGs or any other european car - we'd all have Nissan GTRs.

Good as the M5 and E63 might be - and they are very, very good - they're aimed at a completely different customer.

In a different sector of the market; you wouldn't buy a base Macan, you'd save £8k+ and buy a Cupra Ateca (pretty much the same interior & boot space plus a more powerful version of the same engine) - the same applies here, you can't get away from the sub £20K cross over origins underneath plus you get a fair amount of bespoke Porsche engineering and calibration on all their platform shared cars (whether that and the badge are worth the money is down to you).

I had this internal debate...why not an AMG 63 wagon instead?.

On a rational base it makes complete sense to go with the Mercedes. ( I already have both marques in my garages so not hugely biased) - Same performance, better luggage capacity, a lot cheaper.
.
I was simply that the Porsche felt a bit more special to me, and I went for it anyway.

Cars are an emotive purchase & despite logic saying something is better (or the same for less money) we buy what our heart says we should - but that's not a bad thing.

Have to say, for a wagon, I'd go Panamera Turbo over an E63....but primarily as it is less 'wagon' like.

Very much so. The downside (which I knew) is that the rear deck is too low for my Great Dane. I kept my ancient Cayenne for transporting the dogsmile

It was more the sound of the Turbo S-Ehybrid driving through Manchester city centre (& not in a look at me supercar rental way) that turned my head - I assume the GTS should sound as good.

Sadly I didn't get to hear the one I saw because it was crawling along in traffic whilst I watched from a coffee shop.
